Help with US to UK sizing

Can anybody translate these sizes to UK sizes please? It's an 8 year old girl.

Things she needs clothes (not sure how sizes run) youth junior 0 -3) or size xxl18 Leggett ( no jeans) shoe size 5.5 shirt xxl.

Also, I'd like to send her some sweets that they can't get there, can anybody help with that also? It's for a longtime Facebook friend and her daughter (the little girl's mam) died suddenly a few months back so she's caring for the girl but really struggling, and although I'm a bit skint myself, I'd still like to do something to help. The poor girl just lost her mother, she should at least have a lovely Christmas and something nice to wear.
Thank you!

Your post is really confusing. Is she average size? What brands are you looking at because sizing will vary. Not sure what size xxl18 leggett means in this context?

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 09/12/2018 13:25

The bit with the sizes on is just what I copied and pasted from her Facebook page asking for help with clothes. I can't understand it either, hence asking for help to translate bit here..

I also would like to know what sweets I can buy here to send there that they can't get over there.

Before a recent trip over there I went mad in Sainsbury's sweet aisle and bought flying saucers, fizzy snakes, wine gums, strawberry laces, that sort of thing. My friends were delighted with it all, in fact their daughter had most of it that evening!

Can't help on clothes, but US shoe sizes are usually our UK size plus 2 - eg I'm a 9, so in the US I'd buy an 11. It doesn't always work that way so look at size guides eg on Amazon. Also make sure you mark the customs form as a gift or they could be hit with import charges.

I have had a lot of American size clothes & those numbers make no sense.
The clothes we have had might be XXS or 8T (means age 7-8yo).
Shirt size XXL for an 8yo, sounds, er, weird.

Does this help?

Send a gift voucher so the girl can go to Target / Gap & buy stuff she likes. Double the value of gift coz shopping outing AND new clothes to wear.

Bombardier25966 · 09/12/2018 13:30

Could the mother be asking for clothes for herself too? I'd interpret xxl18 to be women's xxl, US size 18 so UK size 22.

US shoe size 5.5 would be a 3.5 in the UK.

Does the child look quite large? How do you know the lady, except for Facebook?

ragged · 09/12/2018 13:31

Sweets: can be awkward with customs/import rules.

I gave someone long list of American candies I rarely see in Britain but am hesitating trying to think of British equivalents. Peach rings? lemon Sherberts?

ragged · 09/12/2018 13:31

Mint humbugs!

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 09/12/2018 13:33

Yes are you sure your friend understands the clothes are for her grandaughter not her/her partner because they dont relate to any childrens sizes i've ever seen and they dont tally up with the sizes that come on sixe conversion charts

VimFuego101 · 09/12/2018 13:36

I don't think the sizes mentioned are US kids sizes.

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 09/12/2018 13:42

Ok, thanks everyone. I'm not convinced it's for the grandmother, yes the girl is quite large. Probably obese for an 8 year old. Good tip about gift card! I just wanted to help and get her something unique from Tesco England that they couldn't get here.

Thank for sweet tips too! Flying Saucers! Brilliant

To be honest you may not find 'plus size kids' equivalents in the UK - US clothing ranges run a lot larger and offer 'husky' sizing options. You could look at buying online in the US and having it shipped straight to her, or sending gift cards for Target/ old Navy/ JCPenney which all have generously sized kids clothing?

SpaceCadet4000 · 09/12/2018 14:10

Those sound like typical Gap/Old Navy type sides sizes which are fairly standard for other kids clothing in the US. In the kids section XXL in Gap is also termed a 16 (not akin to adult size), age 12-13 or 62-64 inches. I think there must be stores where the XXL is an 18 too, perhaps the husky range.

I think legget is a mistyping of leggings?

SpaceCadet4000 · 09/12/2018 14:12

Just looked at Gap UK and they have a converter between their UK and US sizes for kids clothes, I found it from the link below:

oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=376434002&cid=1011824&pcid=53936

This might help you in other UK stores.

Brilliant, thank you SpaceCadet4000
