Use it in soup or stews

Notlostjustexploring · 09/12/2018 11:09

I've cut them like chips and roasted them in oil/lard - really nice with sausages.

Bejazzled · 09/12/2018 11:11

Still mashed - but 50/50 with mashed potato, using butter and black pepper then as a topping for cottage or shepherds pie.

Same 50/50 mixture but rolled with haggis (if liked) with breadcrumbs for croquettes

PostmanBos · 09/12/2018 11:14

Roasted with plenty of seasoning, salt pepper and herbs.

In a veg soup with onion and celery.

Good in a mixed stew/ casserole. If make one without swede there's something missing!

You could cube and roast with other veg. It can take a lot of spice too.

Nuke them for 20 mins in a microwave and they won't even need boiling and then mashing.

Saves having to chop and peel the damn thing.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 09/12/2018 11:40

Mash them with carrot with lots of butter and black pepper.

senua · 09/12/2018 11:47

A variation on cubed:
add honey
add onion, grated horseradish and orange rind

Parboil equal quantities of swede, carrot and parsnip; then stirfry.

From John Tovey's Feast of Vegetables.

MeOldChina · 09/12/2018 11:49

@dUHcknotdOOk sorty for being dense but do you just put the whole thing in as it comes? I avoid buying swede even though i like it because i can't bear the prep!

dUHcknotdOOk · 09/12/2018 11:53

Yep. Stab it once or twice, stick it in a bowl cos it gets really sticky on the outside and nuke it for 20 mins. Slice the top off and scoop it out.

Tasty and job done.

dUHcknotdOOk · 09/12/2018 11:55

It makes a racket like an old fashioned kettle boiling on the hob though so be warned.

dUHcknotdOOk · 09/12/2018 11:57

This is for a family size one- if you're cooking one of the smaller single serving size ones you might want to cook it for less.

We call that a Singing Hinny round here because of the noise it makes!

cleanhousewastedlife · 09/12/2018 12:11

Is it just me that is thinking about all these things being done to a poor innocent Swedish person who is trying to run away from your kitchen? Put Sven down! (I'll get my coat...)

JingsMahBucket · 09/12/2018 12:33

@cleanhousewastedlife Grin I always have to adjust my comprehension too when people say Swede. Run Sven, run!

Sewrainbow · 09/12/2018 13:12

I love it chopped i cubes and roasted in the oven
