Should my child still be in a high back booster?

She's not far over the height limit, I just wonder whether there are any problems with being in it still?

She's quite old for a booster but generally is quite short so has been in it a long time - I'm happier with her in it and didn't want to take it away the moment she reached the height but is there a danger associated with that?

I've searched online and can't find the details.

Yes, if she’s under 12 and below 135cm she should be in one.

Oldraver · 09/12/2018 08:29

DS was in the same position...In a HBB for longer than most due to being small for age. I must say I preferred this to all his friends who were refusing from an early age.

I would say if she still fits then they are safer than not being in one. They hold the lap part of the belt in the correct position across the hips.

We bought DS an Isofix booster (just the booster part) when he was 11..he used it for a year or so but hasn't used it for the last 6 months. He was very small for his age

Does she still fit in it? Some do up to 150cm. What age is she?

CatAndMice · 09/12/2018 08:30

Leave her in. Most people take them out too soon. Even shorter adults should be in one.

Idontmeanto · 09/12/2018 08:31

Oh she’s over the height. I did read something that suggested 145cm would be a better limit a few years ago. I can’t see whatharm it would do.

greensnail · 09/12/2018 08:34

I kept both of mine in them until they wanted to stop using it. I don't believe there is any risk so long as they still fit and they aren't so tall that the seat belt doesn't sit right.

Oatomatom · 09/12/2018 08:41

There needs to be about an inch between shoulders and the bottom of the head rest sticky outs bit. I had to take my dd(10) out of her HBB at just barely 135cm as her shoulders were touching the head rest and I was told on a FB car seat safety group that that isn’t safe.

The group were keen to recommend other HBB rather than a booster cushion, but I did the measurements and she would only have got another 3cm in the longest backed HBB I could find, which wasn’t worth it for over £100. So she uses a booster cushion now. Most of her friends use the adult seat, but she’s small for her age.

Thank you everyone. I like her to remain in it, she doesn't care and I feel like it's safer - I was just concerned about any possible negative implications. It sounds like there aren't any.

I knew the wise people of mn would know.

can they do ALL of the following?:

Sit with their backs firmly against the seat back.
Bend their knees comfortably over the front of the seat cushion.
Sit with the sash belt across their mid-shoulder.
Sit with the lap belt across the top of their thighs.
Stay in this position for the whole car trip.

If they are above the height AND can do all of these then they are fine without.

If there is even ONE of these that they can't do, they need to stay in a HBB.

Mine will be in one until 150cm which is the law in France where we travel a lot.

I don't care that they don't like it, my car, my rules and I take no chances with car safety.

OhFlipMama · 09/12/2018 08:43

She isn't far off 11, btw.

@ThumpityThumpThump She'd still be in a erf if I had it my way! Grin

Mine was in one until she was just shy of 150cm.

She has very long legs though so her body still fit in the seat. It's whether the shoulders fit generally.

ThumpityThumpThump · 09/12/2018 08:51

ohflip i'm just going through that with my youngest. She's 3 and ERF but is now screaming and so uncomfortable as she wont cross her legs, so her knees are up round her ears!! I can't move the seat to give her more room so i think i'm going to have to turn her FF after christmas Sad

whenwillthetwitchstrike · 09/12/2018 08:54

In Europe, I think they're in them until 150cm so I have told my DC it's that or starting secondary school.

Oatomatom · 09/12/2018 09:02

My seat officially went up to 150cm, but was unsafe for dd at 135cm as all her height is in her back rather than her legs. I couldn’t find a seat with a significantly longer back, so I was wondering how the 150cm rule in France works in practice. Does it have to be a HBB or just a booster?

ThumpityThumpThump · 09/12/2018 09:14

in france - HBB up to 135cm and then a booster cushion allowed from 135-150cm.

Also under tens cannot travel in the front unless there is no back seat available.
