Random money in my account, no idea where from!

AintNobodyHereButUsRavens · 09/12/2018 05:37

Was up early feeding DS and was doing some internet window shopping, decided to see how much money was in my account, I knew there should have been around £18. And yes, indeed there was the £18 I thought, plus £300 Confused

Sometimes my grandma will transfer me money but when I log into my online bank, my grandmas transfers say nothing, they look like this-

123456 / 12345678 £123

So her sort code and account number, then the amount she transferred to me. This random £300 however, looks like this-

Bank credit FRM
12345678901234 £300

The wording, where grandmas don't say anything, what does FRM mean(?) plus the one really long (14 digit) number) that don't match my grandmas numbers. It can't be a cash deposit because apparently you can't deposit cash into other peoples accounts anymore, something to do with money laundering laws. I do get child benefit but the payments look like this-

Bank credit 123456789012-CHB £123

Tax credits go into a different account and no-one else has my bank details to pay me any money Confused So where on earth is it from? I hope it's not a mistake and that it's legit but that possibility seems slim Sad I will ring my grandma later on today but if it's not her I've no idea!

Speak to the bank Monday

EdtheBear · 09/12/2018 05:46

Most banks have a number you can call 7 days not quite 24/7 and shorter working day on Sundays. Try calling them after 9am.

AintNobodyHereButUsRavens · 09/12/2018 05:48

Oh I should add this payment went in on Friday (7th) but I've only just seen it. I'll look up the banks number then, hopefully I'll be able to ring them today.

Fabbo, 7 days a week 8am-8pm! Only 2 hours and 10 minutes to go...

I once had £32,000 appear in my account in tje middle of the night. I absolutely pooed myself. I phoned the bank and they were so shocked and took the mo ey from my account. They rang me a few days later and said they'd found the account it should have been in. Some had missed typed some numbers and it had ended up in mine. They also gave me a £50 reward for honesty as the process of finding it without me owning up could of be lengthy

AintNobodyHereButUsRavens · 09/12/2018 08:20

So I rang the bank, all he could tell me was that it was a direct electrical transfer (so online) and that it was from a Halifax account. My grandma banks with Halifax so maybe she's finally set up online banking? I'll have to ring her later.

Hope you find out OP. Unexpected transactions are always unnerving, like when my bank rang me to ask why £11k in cash had been paid into my account. It turned out to be MIL rinsing DW's late uncle's mattress money, all of which was in out of date fivers.

dementedpixie · 09/12/2018 08:51

The FRM will mean 'from' and the long number will probably be the sort code and account number it came from (sort code is 6 digits and account is 8 digits)

KitKat1985 · 09/12/2018 08:53

Ooh what a mystery. I hope you work it out OP!

dementedpixie · 09/12/2018 08:53

And if course you can pay in cash to someone elses account as long as you have their sort code account number.

ems137 · 09/12/2018 08:58

I paid some cash into my friends bank a few weeks ago

uggmum · 09/12/2018 09:01

The OP is correct
Banks are tightening their rules with cash credits.
They now require identification if you are paying in cash.
If you use the paying in machine it requires your card.
At the counter they will check id and question you if it's over a certain amount.
If they are not satisfied with your explanation they can refuse the credit.
HSBC and Barclays have already introduced this.

AintNobodyHereButUsRavens · 09/12/2018 09:01

DementedPixie you can't, not anymore. I tried to pay some cash into DHs account and they wouldn't let me. I had to put it in mine and then transfer it to him.

I'm assuming that it must be my grandma sending money from a different account instead of her usual one because the numbers don't match. I'll have to ring her later. I asked my mum if she helped grandma set up online banking and she said no, grandma has always said she'd never trust it, mum also checked her own bank and she got £300 too!

Sounds like they were being awkward tbh. It is perfectly legal to pay cash into someone's elses account if you have their account details

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 09/12/2018 09:18

Link that works Hmm Guess who I bank with?

PeonyTruffle · 09/12/2018 09:42

Someone has my £120 deposit return that my childminder paid into the wrong account. She got one digit wrong.

I would have hoped whoever had it would have been honest enough to call the bank and say it wasn't their money but no, even says DS deposit as the reference. Having to go via head office to try and get it taken from the wrong account and into my account.

Be honest, call the bank

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 09/12/2018 09:44

Just don’t spend it until you know for sure!

dementedpixie · 09/12/2018 09:48

OP had already called the bank. All they can tell her is the bank it came from. I suppose if your grandma went into her own bank she could have done the transfer to your account there rather than using online banking

Lovestonap · 09/12/2018 09:51

Pm me if you'd like my online bank details to pass along to your grandma, she sounds awesome!

EducatingSweary · 09/12/2018 10:14

fingers crossed its a nice little gift from grandma

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 09/12/2018 12:59

Ahh I love my grandma, she really is awesome Xmas Smile it is from her!
