sorry if that sounds v.dramatic, i am especially mindful as i developed early (periods at 10) and i think DH did. Hes had deodorant since 8 as could get sweaty sometimes, and i wanted to get him into the habit gently. He is v tall for his age, 5ft. His hair is oiled than previously and needs washing more frequently and i looked under his arms as i do to check sometimes, and although not hair I could see hair follicles close to the surface Confused Sad I feel a bit wierd now, hrs just a little boy. Does he need a dr?

He's completely normal, don't worry.

staydazzling · 08/12/2018 19:56

Oh that's a relief i thought it would constitute as precocious puberty?

I think 9 is in the normal range.

Seems so early - DS is 7 and has body odour :(

BWatchWatcher · 08/12/2018 20:19

It’s the early side of normal. Take him to the gp if you are concerned. 5 foot at age 9 deserves a second look just to be sure.

staydazzling · 08/12/2018 20:19

I just googled and i think if its over 8 its considered ok , early but ok, definitely niceupthedance Sad

He’s still got a way to go. 5ft at 9 is worth getting checked out though!

EleanorLavish · 09/12/2018 07:33

One of my sons is very tall (tallest in his year at junior school).
He has full on pubic hair, has been shaving a fluffy ‘tache for a year, stinks to high heaven ( have to shove him in shower and spray liberally with Mitchum) and he is still only 11yo.
He was quite ill when he was 8/9, in hospital for a long time lots of meds and lots of steroids. I think that brought it all on. Never mentioned it to the docs.
He still acts like an 11yo loon though, Grin!

retainertrainer · 09/12/2018 08:22

My DS started needing to use deodorant at 8, pubic hair started at the same time (just a few hairs). He’s 10 next month. He’s now got a few armpit hairs and a few little spots have started to crop up. I had a phone consultation when it first all started and the gp reassured me it’s all normal. I do still worry though, it just seems too young to me! He’s self conscious about the armpit hair (even though you have to get it really close to see it) . He asked to shave it and following advice on here, we’ve let him do it. I’m sure once he sees other boys getting hair he won’t be as self conscious but for now it’s given him his confidence back particularly when swimming.

The height is understandable, im 5'9 and DH is 6'4 , it doesn't concern me.

I'm relieved im not as alone as i thought, his dad also noticed him fiddling downstairs, maybe hairs coming in and causing irratation. Hes got Aspergers and the influx of hormones and mood swings im dreading.

OP posts:
niceupthedance · 09/12/2018 18:36

That's interesting op, my DS has suspected Asperger's and I am also worrying about the hormonal effect of puberty starting earlier!

staydazzling · 09/12/2018 19:00

Definitely its such a scary issue even with NT kids, especially with him being so tall im 5'9 but he'll soon be taller than if meltdowns turn violent etc I suppose we'll cross that bridge...

*soon be taller than me and worrying if meltdowns turn violent.

My daughter has just turned 9 and is 5ft. She has had deodorant for about a year, though needs lots of prompting to remember to use it. She is starting to need to wash her hair more frequently and about 6 months ago started developing breasts. She is the tallest in her class. I hadn't even thought to be worried. I started my periods at 10 and her dad is very tall.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 09/12/2018 22:13

My DS had armpit hair aged 9/10 also tall (we are similar heights to you and your DH) and has needed deodorant for a while. I also panicked when I first noticed but it’s normal. He can get hormonal, often gets sad without knowing why or suddenly very angry but he hasn’t been violent, just snappy and sarcastic.

MaryPoppinsDick · 09/12/2018 22:53

I posted about this in health, my DD(7) has pubic hair. I’m going to talk to the GP because although she’s small for her age, she’s had a good growth spurt recently which I though was her just catching up but which may also be an indication of precocious puberty.

staydazzling · 10/12/2018 10:54

It must be part and parcel of being tall maybe? Mary Poppins aw bless you I would in that case get checked to be safe some girls are just very early. Yy! Surlyness!!!

steppemum · 10/12/2018 11:00

totally normal.
Puberty is a long drawn out process.
It starts with a bit smelly and BO and needing to use doedorant, moves on through beginnings of hair in armoits and underarms, and gradually all moves on form there.

ds is now 16. He was also veyr tall (6'3" now)
he was smelly at about 8/9, and gradually started with armpit hair and then pubic hair.
It has just all increased bit by bit over the years. Gradually his face and body have changed.
It is actually easier for boys as there isn't such a visible change in terms of boobs and periods.

Please don't worry

thankyou steppenmum. Smile
