Tried looking online but different answers but just wondering if I had 3 paracetamol yesterday with the last dose at 930pm last night would it be ok to have a glass of wine tonight ?

It’s antibiotics you should avoid with alcohol

It’s actually only one type of antibiotic which provokes a reaction, in some people, in combination with alcohol.

Most others are fine :) it’s just a catch all to say avoid antibiotics with alcohol, as many lay persons won’t know which antibiotic they’re on and whether it’s one that may cause a reaction.

CherryPavlova · 08/12/2018 19:00

Most antibiotics are fine with wine too. Check the leaflet.

Littlebelina · 08/12/2018 19:24

It's metronidazole (antibiotic) that should avoid with alcohol (there might one other) and if you are prescribed that they plaster it onnthe prescription sticker and tell you not to drink as well!

That's not a hard and fast rule. There are many antibiotics that you can take and drink alcohol. Equally there are lots of other medications you have to avoid alcohol with.

Bunnybigears · 08/12/2018 19:34

Ita only one type of antibiotic where you have to avoid alcohol as its the same thing they give to alcoholics to help them stop drinking as it makes you horrendously sick when you drink. I found this out to my detriment when I had an infected tooth!

treesup · 08/12/2018 19:49

There's no contradiction between paracetamol and alcohol

Notquiteagandt · 08/12/2018 19:56

I always take couple paracetamol after a big session to try scare off a hangover.

Ive taken them with a drink before if ive git headache when out.

Infact hot toddy and paracetamol is actively encouraged isnt it?

Nope it isn’t the same drug at all :)

Alcoholics are given disulfiram. It is not an antibiotic.

The antibiotic is metronidazole. Different drug. In some people, it can produce symptoms similar to those caused by disulfiram. Only in some people, which would mean it’s useless to stop alcoholics drinking as it wouldn’t work in most.

On the bright side if I were to ever become an alcoholic I absolutely would be able to use the antibiotic to stop me drinking it was horrendous!

MrMeSeeks · 08/12/2018 20:48

I was told not to drink on the antibiotic beginning with e also, all others fine

BucketLid · 08/12/2018 22:41

Lol! Calm down, love. You'll be grand.

WhoNose88 · 08/12/2018 23:27

I think there is a group of painkillers that react with alcohol though, is it opiates? Pharmacists/medics, can you corroborate?

Vaguely remember something about that, but not paracetamol, no.

EdWinchester · 08/12/2018 23:33

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

I quite often swig them down with wine.

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 09/12/2018 12:33

Sympathies OP. I have always been told not to mix paracetamol and alcohol as they both sollicit the liver.

I was told this by family members working in hospitals, among which hepatology (not sure about spelling, but the liver transplant unit basically) which could be the trigger for their warning (i.e. seeing so many damaged livers).

I expect for most healthy low drinkers the risk is minimal, but I have been marked for life.

DappledThings · 09/12/2018 13:01

Which is why saying you're not drinking because you're on antibiotics is basically like hanging a neon sign round your neck saying "I'M PREGNANT".

CherryPavlova · 09/12/2018 17:14

The efficacy of some antibiotics is affected by alcohol- not just Metronidazole.
Some drugs are potentiated by alcohol.
Read the leaflet!

Iknowthatguy · 09/12/2018 17:47

If you have a healthy liver then there's no issue with taking paracetamol and drinking at the same time.
If you made a habit of either / both then it could become an issue.

reallyanotherone · 09/12/2018 17:47

Not heard of antibiotics being made more effective by alcohol. Any idea which ones? I’d be interested to check it out.

CherryPavlova · 09/12/2018 18:09

Not antibiotics. I said drugs. As with any medicine, one should read the label. Antibiotic efficacy is more about the specific infection and what it may be sensitive too.
