Unhelpful landlord- fire risk

Our front door is jammed. I think it has swollen up in the cold damp weather. With both of my arms free I can force it open but it takes a lot of pushing and pulling.

I have reported to out landlords and hey have said that this just happens in this weather and haven't bothered to come out and look at it.

I have pointed out to them that this creates a serious fire risk. In the event of a fire originating from a room downstairs it would be our only exit. We have a baby and a 6 year old. I couldn't get the door open with a baby in my arms and the 6 yo certainly couldn't get it open. It would take DH a fair few tugs to get it open.

What do I do now? I have emailed several times and they just aren't interested. Day to day it isn't a huge problem as we use the back door to come in and out. we are moving soon so I could just leave it and hope there is no fire before we leave but then it would be an issue for someone else.

Sounds pretty simple to solve yourself.

More suggestions here.

Personally I'd report to your local environmental health.

Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing simple we've tried has worked so far and the landlord has that planing can cause issues in dry weather (not that I feel that is something we should have to do ourselves)

Fire Marshall.

Went we rented a damp shithole they didn't provide window keys and they would have been our only exit route as the kitchen was by the only door in and out.

They called the council... council called the landlord. Got keys the next day... after complaining for weeks!

Firstty · 08/12/2018 14:37

How would I get hold of a fire Marshall?

I don't think they exist where I am, OP. Local environmental health at your local authority will exist everywhere, though

I called the fire department.

They were more helpful than environmental health, who I called first!

Beansonapost · 10/12/2018 02:55

@Firstty rather fire station and just explained.

Call the fire department. Absolutely.
