Can a baby be heavy but small?

My little man was born at 5lb3oz. He's now 6 weeks old and weighs 9lb. The clothes we've got him though (up to 9lb) are still huge and he still fits in to much of his tiny baby clothes. A lot of people have commented on how tiny he is for 9lb too...

Normal?

Ds2 was very "dense" compared to DS1 so know what you mean - so yes, possible and normal. Enjoy you lovely baby!

Dothehappydance · 08/12/2018 11:26

My ds was 7lbs 1 born, he fitted into the tiny baby stuff for ages as he was all skinny.

CalmConfident · 08/12/2018 11:28

He will likely grow into his weight overnight...just keep feeding and doing all the normal things and try not to fret or worry

Yes! My second son was 10lb2oz but wore newborn size clothes for a good 4-5 weeks he was still quite small bless him!

BrokenWing · 08/12/2018 11:32

Is he chunky rather that long/tall? I always found ds grew out of clothes length wise.

ItIsChristmasTime · 08/12/2018 11:32

I think some babies are just shorter than others, so will stay in the smaller sizes for longer.

SoyDora · 08/12/2018 11:34

Yes, they’re all different builds. I’m always surprised when people say don’t bother with newborn clothes as their 7lb baby when straight into 0-3 months... DD2 was nearly 9lbs at birth and was in newborn stuff for at least a few weeks (she put on nearly 1lb a week for her first 6 weeks too). Some are long and thin, some small and more dense.

Spanneroo · 08/12/2018 11:37

Yep. DD1 was 7lb born but couldn't get her into smaller than 0-3 clothes as she was so long. Also had a diddy head, which I'm sure accounts for 80% of their weight at that point. DD2 was 8lb 5 and was in tiny baby for weeks and weeks. I now have a very gangly four year old and a tiny but heavy 18 month old!

Eeeeek2 · 08/12/2018 11:38

My dd was almost a lb heavier than ds but slightly shorter and definitely smaller head. She just has more rolls

Woooman · 08/12/2018 11:44

My dd was a very normal 7lb 5oz at birth but she was very short I guess because I had to buy her "tiny baby" baby gros because the newborn ones were so colossal on her. So yes, baby can be heavy but small.

Blackladybug · 08/12/2018 11:45

Yup, 7.14 and in 5lb tiny baby clothes

LoriAnya · 08/12/2018 12:52

Or maybe the supermarkets have just got it wrong!

My son was 11lbs (and half an ounce!) and had to go straight into 3 month clothes, newborn wouldn't go anywhere near him. he was a long baby rather than a chunky one.

Ownerofalittlechimp · 08/12/2018 16:00

Yep ds2 was very dense, 9lb 12 but small, shorter than ds1 by 7.5 cms but 1lb heavier. Was in newborn for a good few weeks & 0-3 till about 6mths. Still a little dot now at 20mths but heavy!

Phillipa12 · 08/12/2018 16:09

Ds3 was short and even midwife reckoned 9 1/2lbs when looking at him, then she picked him up...... and quickly changed her mind, he weighed 11.6lbs.

Iknowthatguy · 08/12/2018 16:12

I wouldn't go by clothes sizes.
My son was 8lb12oz when he was born and fit into first size with space to spare

caoraich · 08/12/2018 16:18

I have one of these too! 7 weeks old, 8lb 13 and only just out of "tiny baby" and into newborn outfits. I wonder if it's muscle mass therefore more dense, from all the punching of my boobs that she does.... Grin

Smurf123 · 08/12/2018 16:39

My son was 5lbs 2 when he was born he spent about 6 or so weeks in tiny baby / preemie clothes and then all of a sudden started to fit the ones for his age. Now at 9 months (and 2 days old) he has been wearing his 9-12 month Christmas present clothes for at least a week or 2 now as 6-9 looked tiny on him
