Book Folding. What on earth is that all about?

I do not understand the appeal. It seems very boring and complicated and what do you do with it when you have finished?

It's vandalism Angry

Ohyesiam · 07/12/2018 20:21

I suppose you could give them to someone whose hobby is dusting?

It does seem like that. I hate it when people fold the corner down to mark their page, or write in the margin in pencil.

They just look like they would gather so much dust. I don’t get it either.

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2018 20:23

This one is a bit ironic. Nobody can read it now. Hmm

Vandalism. Why ruin a book?

Eastpoint · 07/12/2018 20:25

Such a waste of time. I can’t get upset about the book itself as it could be a dreadful book with appalling views or zero plot but why bother?

MrsMeow · 07/12/2018 20:26

It makes me really uncomfortable! How could anyone deface a book?!

SexNotJenga · 07/12/2018 20:26

I don't mind people writing on them so much - at least they're engaging with the text, and if can be interesting to see what someone else thinks. But that bollocks makes them unreadable. It's like... Like taking the keys off a piano, or hanging a painting so it faces the wall.

Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2018 20:28

I have watched a You Tube video of how to do it. It was quite baffling and involved a lot of ruler usage.

We used to do this with our hymn book at school.pure boredom HmmGrin

Avrannakern · 07/12/2018 20:31

Thing is, they sell for like... £25 but they take hours and hours and hours to make. The people who do this for a living must earn very very little.

minipie · 07/12/2018 20:38

I’ve seen this kind of thing before, several years ago. It was generally done with obsolete books eg old law volumes or out of date encyclopaedias and textbooks.

epicclusterfuck · 07/12/2018 20:47

There is a secret book sculptor who used to leave artwork around Edinburgh - these are amazing though!

Whynotnowbaby · 07/12/2018 20:48

I have never seen it before and certainly couldn’t be arsed to do it myself but I actually quite like the Read one!

TheGreenDot · 07/12/2018 20:51

Horses for courses?
It’s actually very easy to do. Methodical
But not something I’d display or sell.

Moreisnnogedag · 07/12/2018 21:00

Nooo! I have banned my husband from turning the corners of pages down to mark his spot. I couldn’t stand that - its like those ornaments made out of pages from books - how could they?!

mimibunz · 07/12/2018 21:01

I write in margins and fold the corners of pages. Books are to be used, read and re-read. There’s a saying about ‘reading with a pen’ and with good reason.

CormoranStrike · 07/12/2018 21:07

Catalogues are a good alternative, see my Christmas tree, and it is relaxing to do.
However, not all books are good, so it is not really vandalism!
I made a fairy tree from one.

Moreisnnogedag · 07/12/2018 21:12

Oh sorry I didn’t mean to say they weren’t good - its just I have ingrained inability to do anything to a book, even textbooks or awful books! My mom would go spare!

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 07/12/2018 21:58

There are books which merit this treatment, but I could never, ever bring myself to do it.

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2018 08:12

That's a good point Jamie, I have read a few howlers in my time. Grin

I like your catalogue tree Cormoran, I am not sure I have the patience, but can see how that could be relaxing when you can do it well.

It is surprisingly quick to do @sparklingbrook

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2018 17:49

Won't I get all ratty if I can't get it right?
