How to keep newborn warm on way home from hospital?

I just want to be prepared for when baby arrives.

Ive been told that snowsuits shouldn't be used with a car seat so how to you wrap up a newborn when it's so cold/freezing out there?

Dress the baby in a long sleeved vest and sleep suit, and hat, then a nice thick blanket on top once the baby is strapped in.

PotteringAlong · 07/12/2018 19:22

You put a blanket on them.

3littlemonkeys82 · 07/12/2018 19:22

A few layers, a hat and a blanket would be fine. They say naby needs 1 more layer than you as a rule. You can get sone loveky carseat blankets that fit around the straps if you google it should give you some ideas.

Baby... obviously. One day I'll start proof reading these posts Blush

Wenttoseainasieve · 07/12/2018 19:23

Vest, baby gro, blanket. Maybe a hat which I'd remove in the car.

DearTeddyRobinson · 07/12/2018 19:23

Have a few layers on baby, plus a cellular blanket to cover them in the car. You presumably have the heating on in the car too. My pfb was born at the end of a very snowy January, I think we had a fleecy onesie rather than a full snow suit.

User0ne · 07/12/2018 19:32

Assuming someone else is driving get them to pre warm the car.

More seriously though it won't be a problem as long as they've got a couple of layers on and you aren't outside for long.

Thesearmsofmine · 07/12/2018 19:34

Hat and blanket! My eldest was born when we had a lot of snow and we were able to bring the car right up to the doors so he was only outside for a few seconds.

Willow1992 · 07/12/2018 19:34

My understanding is that it's better to dress a new born in lots of layers (including blankets) than one puffy suit. I remember I didn't get my son a snow suit until he was a couple of months old and even then it looked quite bulky and uncomfortable!
For my second I am bringing a pile of vests and sleep suits to the hospital, a few hats, a couple of cardigans, a couple of cellular blankets and an extra warm blanket for the journey home.
I'm sure I remember being advised that babies will let you know if they get chilly, but can just become drowsy if they are too hot and you can always add more layers if needed.

FrostyMoanyWind · 07/12/2018 19:35

They can get very warm in car seats - all the padding so it's better to use e.g. a blanket on top of them that you can take off if need be.

shecamefromgreece · 07/12/2018 19:38

Have a look at tuppence and crumble star blankets I I used them loads with my dc.
You can also get like a cover thing that zips around them like a sleeping bag with a hood for some car seats I know maxi cosi do them.

Louise856 · 07/12/2018 19:42

M&S do lovely knitted hooded cardigans for babies which are useful for the car!

Eminybob · 07/12/2018 19:43

You can also get car seat foot muffs that you can zip the baby into

Youmadorwhat · 07/12/2018 19:55

If you’re getting a car seat blanket be careful as not all are crash tested. The morrck ones are tested. Not sure about other brands.

SnuggyBuggy · 07/12/2018 19:58

Just layer up, hat and blanket over the top of car seat.

LBOCS2 · 07/12/2018 20:02

Get a Morrck or a tuppence and crumble blanket, they're brilliant.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 07/12/2018 20:03

A blanket.

ILikTheBred · 07/12/2018 20:09

Car seat footmuffs are great. You can put the cover on when outside or when car is still cold, and zip it down when it’s warmer.

AgentCooper · 07/12/2018 20:09

@shecamefromgreece I second you on the Tuppence and Crumble star blankets. I got one for DS when he was born last year and it was brilliant - so much easier to get a wriggly wee one into than a snowsuit! And cute as anything. I buy them for friends having babies all the time now, they should pay me commission Grin

shecamefromgreece · 07/12/2018 20:12

Ha ha me too agentcooper everyone I know who has a baby gets one too!!

ILikTheBred · 07/12/2018 20:15

My car seat footmuff was a Wallaboo. The best thing about it was I could just lift the baby directly into the car seat in his sleepsuit and zip him up, and he was nice and cosy for his older brother’s school run. No faffing with getting him in and out of snowsuits for a ten minute trip.

PastramiAndRye · 07/12/2018 20:15

I third the Tuppence and Crumble fleece. Absolutely brilliant!

MimiSunshine · 07/12/2018 20:38

Baby wears: vest, sleep suit, little woollen cardigan (hoodless as they while predominantly lay down and get in the way), possibly little scratch mits and new born Cotten hat.

In the car put a blanket over them or I recommend the Morrck blanket hoody.
Great for the car seat, can’t be kicked off or pulled up over the face
