Food for vegan visitors?

creepymoustache · 06/12/2018 20:51

I have 2 friends visiting this weekend who are both vegan. They are only visiting for a few hours in the afternoon so no lunch/dinner required but I'd normally have a few light snacks/ cakes or something. Problem is, I have no idea what vegan people can eat. I've looked online but I'm getting myself confused. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Houma us and crudités. Check bread doesn’t have milk .

Julianaa · 06/12/2018 20:53

A couple of types of hummus, crudités, and crackers/breadsticks (check they're milk free, lots are).

Nothing that comes from an animal in any form. If you're thinking cake for with coffee or something then Google the Tesco vegan Victoria sponge recipe. It's yummy and like normal cake but free from all animal products. I use it as my lil one has allergies and can't have dairy or egg so vegan options are great for us. Hope this is some help.

Are you able to cook? There are simple recipes online for things like vegan brownies. Most cakes would have eggs and butter in them. If you aren’t baking your supermarket should have some vegan snacks in the “free from” aisle - just check they are vegan not just gluten free! Most ordinary biscuits and crisps won’t be suitable. If you bake use oil instead of butter.

Vinorosso74 · 06/12/2018 20:55

Olives, crisps/tortilla chips-stick to plain flavours but I would still double check the ingredients.
Are you any good at baking as there are lots of vegan cake recipes online.

Ohyesiam · 06/12/2018 20:57

Pretty much all of Sainsbury’s Free From range is dairy free. Lots of things like chocolate brownies and chocolate fudge slices.

DialsMavis · 06/12/2018 21:01

Tesco now have deserts: the wicked range.
Quite a lot of donuts are vegan
Greg's mince pies!

How do you mean you are getting yourself confused op? It's incredibly simple.

Vegan's don't eat anything derived from animals. So a cake would have to be made without dairy (butter) or eggs. I'm sure it's perfectly possible to source any number of vegan cakes in your local supermarket, or if not make one from a vegan recipe site online.

A580Hojas · 06/12/2018 21:02

Here's a handy link.

Ocado do a range of vegan cake mixes that look great.
You might not have time to get one baked for this visit, but save the idea for next time.

As they are making a trip to see you, a mug of homemade vegan soup might be welcome.

Dairy products seem to be in a lot more things than I realised so a number of ideas I've had turned out not to be suitable.

Flapjacks made with vegan margarine. Easy.

creepymoustache · 06/12/2018 21:07

Thanks everyone. I'm in the middle of an online food shop (Tesco) and I'm not the best baker so may have a look at their free from ranges and see if there's anything suitable there ☺️

Tesco have a good free from selection. Blackcurrant cheesecake and some mince pies and things. If you have a local coop their jam and custard donuts are vegan .

90mammasophie · 06/12/2018 21:16

I went to a vegan friend's home recently. She offered us a selection of veg snacks (carrot sticks, red pepper sticks, cucumber) presenter nicely. Some crisps in a bowl and the a fruit salad. Lovely afternoon and we enjoyed the snacks too. Healthy! We weren't there for a meal.

wejammin · 06/12/2018 21:21

Get the Tesco Wicked red velvet brownie, it's divine!
Oreos
Bendick's mint chocolates
Kettle chips - plain, salt and vinegar
Pringles - plain, Texas BBQ, paprika
Houmous
Salsa
Olives
Get some oat or soya milk for hot drinks - oatly barista is the absolute best

Belmo · 06/12/2018 21:22

Oreos
Salt and vinegar crisps!

AdaColeman · 06/12/2018 21:29

Quite a lot of the Nakd bars and biscuits are vegan, and would go with a cup of tea (no milk obviously).

FreakForHummous · 06/12/2018 21:31

Onion bhajis & vegetable pakoras
Crusty bread (double check there's no milk in the bread ) with humous,
olives & sundries tomatoes,
Falafel
Mixed Nuts
Plain tortilla chips
Mini roast potatoes
Lotus biscuits
Linda McCartney's Wellington bites (if your local supermarket has them)

Totally agree that Oatly barista is the best non dairy milk for hot drinks!
