Does the car a man drives affect your perception of how attractive he is?

I didn't give this much thought, as in the city where I live, most people I know (and have dated) take a taxi or the tram. But today I was heading home and noticed a guy on the other side of the carriage, he had a sheepdog with him and was dressed in old hiking boots, grubby combats and a waterproof jacket. I thought he looked cute, but a bit "trampy" for my liking.

Anyway, he got off at the same stop as me and was walking in front of me as I left the station. He walked straight up to a huge Mercedes 4x4, put the dog in the back and drove off. It was a new car, big shiny black thing, lots of bling.

Now I have to say, my perception of him changed in an instant. He went from cute but grubby to cute and obviously out walking his dog before heading back to his mansion and fabulous life. I wouldn't have given the train guy my number if he paid me, but 4x4 guy could have had my number, address and inside leg measurement if he just asked!

Ever happened to anybody else? Perception is such a strange thing.

Not much because there are loads of criterion for cars- they might be shared or have to accommodate dogs or children or be from a small list a company allows its employers to chose from.
If anything I’d be a bit Hmm about anyone driving anything over about £30k as it shows a lack of imagination. The art, the holidays you could buy!

crosser62 · 06/12/2018 19:44

Absolutely not.
It’s a thing that gets you from A to B as far as I can see.
I wouldn’t know what one car was over another to be honest so it’s totally lost on me what people drive.

ScreamingValenta · 06/12/2018 19:45

In the sense that I find big, flashy cars a complete turn-off, yes!

INeedNewShoes · 06/12/2018 19:50

Big flashy cars are a turn off for me. The kind of guy I would like spending time with is one to whom it would never occur to buy a flashy car.

I've been ghosted twice in my younger life - both times by drivers of flashy cars.

Now obviously that's not to say that all men who drive flashy cars are utter cunts...

kelper · 06/12/2018 19:53

Lol my DH drove a metro when we first met!! Not my favourite car in the whole world, however it had a tuned engine and went like hell!
He's a mechanic so we have quite a lot of cars, he's currently got a very fast small sports car, which I much prefer ;) But I'm a petrolhead and cars interest me to start with, I'd imagine if someone drove a "flashy" car that they shared an interest with me if that makes sense?

ScreamingValenta · 06/12/2018 19:56

I just wouldn't imagine I could have much in common with someone who thought spending £££££££ on a car was a good use of their money, so I'd see the relationship as a non-starter.

incallthebloodytime · 06/12/2018 20:01

Flashy cars put me off

People carrier practical type cars I would give my number to ... except I don't as they're likely to be married with 8 kids

Raines100 · 06/12/2018 20:07

For the man you describe, a nice car would change my perception positively. However, this is because my initial worry over the 'trampy' look would be that he might be unambitious or lazy at best or, at worst, an actual tramp! A nice car removes those fears.

I agree with pp, a flashy car suggests a big head and a small dick, but perhaps the trampy look removes that fear, so, in fact, the trampy look/flash car combo is a real winner!! Grin

5amWakeUo · 06/12/2018 20:08

Nope. More the interest in said car. If a man mentions the car he drives or asks me about mine it may put me off (depending on context) as I don't give a flying fuck about cars so our values are probably different.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 06/12/2018 20:11

So often men can't afford to buy the car of their dreams until they're middle aged. I always think they look a bit ridiculous tbh, trying to get into some little thing that's low down. (that's probably not a technical term)

Or they just enjoy cars, like some people prefer other things Confused

I have no strong feelings either way on the subject, and neither of our cars could be called flashy or old bangers - but I can never see how some people get so utterly judgmental about one single thing. Quite the stereotyping and inverse snobbery going on in this thread. Bizarre.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/12/2018 20:23

Well, clearly not, because trampy train guy would have had me at hello, largely because of his border collie of course, but, y’know Grin

ikltownofboothlehem · 06/12/2018 20:30

No. DH drove a Floorbrite van when I met him.

ClemClemFandango · 06/12/2018 20:35

I'd probably have preferred him before, I like a man who is a bit grubby around the edges.

I don't care about the car anyone drives, I wouldn't get excited by an expensive car or put off by a banger. I'm one of those, "It was a blue one...", types when I'm asked what kind of car it was.

happyclutterchucker · 06/12/2018 20:40

Yeah, well, apart from the dog, my dh answers to that description, but drives around in a battered old jalopy that stinks of weird herbal supplements for farm animals.

So he's safe from the OP then Grin

halfwitpicker · 06/12/2018 20:43

Only on here would you get the naysayers : oh no, it'd never affect me, what car a guy drives!

I once shagged dated a guy who had a gorgeous expensive blue Merc : he was fit but the car made him more appealing, tbh

halfwitpicker · 06/12/2018 20:43

Totally off thread, but are dogs allowed on trains?

ScreamingValenta · 06/12/2018 20:46

Dogs are allowed on trains in the UK, free of charge. Smile

halfwitpicker · 06/12/2018 20:47

Wow, screaming, that's great

Whowouldathunkit · 06/12/2018 20:52

Ok, so cars don't matter then?

But surely it's relative, if a guy can afford to drive a big flash Mercedes then for him it probably isn't a big deal and doesn't feel like he's blowing 30 grand on a flash car. For him it's probably like buying a Mondeo.

But I have to be honest, for me, being presented with such an overt sign of wealth DID make him more attractive.

Christ I must be so shallow!
