Sausage and mash for tea, with peas and cabbage on the side. How do I make cabbage taste nice?

Look for burnt butter cabbage

mrsseashell · 06/12/2018 16:50

Oh that looks good but I've already hacked mine to bits

If you have steamer, use that and then add a bit of butter before serving. We like our cabbage quite crunchy.

Microwave with a bit water in bowl and fresh ginger. ( or add a bit ginger powder)

Just don't overcook it, although to be honest I love cabbage any old way, except braised with sultanas in.Envy

MrsStarwars · 06/12/2018 16:54

Lots of pepper and salt in the water, don’t cook for too long!

flippedoff · 06/12/2018 16:57

i love this one. Often just eat it as a meal. www.justapinch.com/recipes/side/side-vegetable/cashew-cabbage.html

Sitranced · 06/12/2018 16:58

This is my favourite...works with any type of cabbage.

ZenNudist · 06/12/2018 17:03

I fry it. Sometimes slow cook onions or leeks and then add cabbage. Often chuck in a splash of water to keep cooking it longer. I also add either caraway seed or black mustard seeds other times.

When i steam it i try not to overcook and add butter and black pepper when cooked

Pebblespony · 06/12/2018 17:05

Agree with don't overcook and add butter and maybe black pepper. My mother cooks hers in a pressure cooker with bacon for an hour. It's just salty mush (shudder).

PickAChew · 06/12/2018 17:06

What sort of cabbage do you have?

Savoy and sweetheart just need cooking for a few minutes, then tossing in butter, with plenty of pepper. Savoy also stir fries beautifully.

White cabbage is best raw. That's the one that is often boiled to death - MIL would out hers on then go out and pick FIL up from the club. Revolting?

PickAChew · 06/12/2018 17:07

Punctuation fail.

shecamefromgreece · 06/12/2018 17:14

Parboil then pan fry with olive oil and butter and lots of black pepper and a pinch of salt a bit of streaky bacon fried with it is delicious too.

cantfindname · 06/12/2018 17:20

Chop it up, put in a pan and boil for around an hour.. or until it screams for mercy. At least that what my mum used to do.

Parboil and then pan fry is delicious.

VforVloodyHell · 06/12/2018 17:23

I must be weird cos I loved overboiled cabbage, just like my nan used to make!

Notwiththeseknees · 06/12/2018 17:26

As the others say, nice & simple, steamed or par-boiled, drain, back in pan, add butter and masses of black pepper. Add some shaved Parmesan on top if feeling fancy.......

raindancemumma · 06/12/2018 17:43

Definitely don't over cook and definitely back in the pan with butter (I usually add a dollop if whole grain mustard to mine too)

mrsseashell · 06/12/2018 20:33

I booked for a few mins, added lots of butter, then added to a pan of fried bacon lardons- was delicious and I'd eaten most of it before I put it on the plates Blush

Sounds good! I sometimes just have that with some nice crusty bread.
