I have always craved sugar and had a 'sweet tooth' but it's just getting worse for me. I've put a stone and a half on lately and eat entire 'sharing' bags of sweets in one go.
What can I do to stop the sugar cravings?
I'm making myself feel like shit eating all this crap and I know it's bad for me but I still do it!

I did a sugar detox. It took 12 weeks so wasn't cold turkey. I lost just over a stone in that time.
It was run by a nutritionist/personal trainer. I can give you the details if you're interested.

Hi BlueUggs yes please. It's making me miserable to keep piling it on. I had to buy new uniform trousers because I couldn't fit in mine

Mmmm it’s very hard.

I eat dark chocolate - at least 85 per cent and dates as my treat. However I eat these every day so I haven’t really broken the habit but it’s manageable.

WeeSausage · 06/12/2018 13:58

Cold turkey. I only eat a piece of fruit after meals now. It was easier than I'd expected - after the first few days!

Imonaonehorseopensleighhey · 06/12/2018 14:06

The only thing that worked for me was to stop buying them. I'm not completely sugar free .. I have half a spoon of sugar in tea once a day and a couple of biscuits after my evening meal. But i used to eat have a large bar of milk chocolate every day plus sweets quite often, so I'm happy with that. I just don't buy sweets or chocolate. Dd isn't bothered and there's no one else here!

I followed "I Quit Sugar" by Sarah Wilson. She gets you to stop eating sugar in all its forms so that your palate adjusts. You train your body to get energy from protein and fat, instead of craving sugar. When you taste sugar again it tastes far too sweet.
You have to really want to give it up, otherwise it's too hard. For motivation when I was giving it up, I read stuff about the negative effects of sugar, and how much better people felt after giving it up.
I get far less tired than I used to, having given it up, and I don't get the stomach /indigestion pains I'd sometimes get. The improved energy is the best part though.

Can I join in? I'm totally addicted to sugar and often feel like a big kid as I eat sweets and chocolate.

I've also piled on the weight as I eat when I'm bored too. I really do need to go cold turkey but it will be so hard.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 06/12/2018 15:51

If you don't buy it you can't eat it.I have an issue with having no control with having sweet treats in the house so that's my solution.

I have a sweet tooth. I love Haribo, chocolate and cakes.

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes so now have to monitor my blood sugar 4 times a day and inject myself with 2 kinds of insulin. It's amazing how just seeing the effect that consuming sugar in any form has on my blood sugar has altered my desire to eat sweet things. I mean, I still want to, but seeing the spike in blood sugar and understanding the consequences of that (not just for the baby, also the longer term consequences), has really made me think.

Little things like having Splenda in my tea instead of a sugar, and not having my little "treats" after lunch and dinner all add up over the course of the day, to mean my overall intake of sugar is really reduced.

Also despite being pregnant I must have lost some body fat as a result of this because my face looks a bit more defined.

I have tried to quit sugar before (when not pregnant) but this time I am really going to keep it going after the pregnancy. Seeing those blood sugar spikes has made me realise how easy it would be for someone like me to develop Type 2 diabetes.

You can buy blood sugar monitoring kits online for not much money. It's been an eye opener for me.

I was diagnosed with a condition where I get really bad headaches due to nerves in my face. One of the things they say is no choc, no fizzy drinks, no tea. It’s due to the caffeine but I just can’t give up fizzy drinks . I last no more than two weeks and I don’t have them every day just one or two a week but thY enough to give me a headache that makes me bed bound. I’m thinking the only way to do it is go sugar free completely.

DontHarshMyMello · 06/12/2018 16:14

I have gone nearly sugar free. I have a very occasional treat at Christmas and birthdays but not everyday like I was.
Like others said it’s best to just quit and go cold turkey, just don’t buy it or have it in the house. It’s like smoking you need to break a habit - if you sit down to something on tv at 8 and you reach for a cuppa and chocolate bar change your routine so this doesn’t happen. Every time I crave something sweet I tell myself it’s just a craving and it will pass. I also have a cold drink of water.

Corneliusmurphy · 06/12/2018 16:20

Cold turkey, I read Allan Carr’s good sugar bad sugar book as my friend used his method to give up smoking. It was a bit ott but I’ve been off sugar since June.

I do not eat processed foods, starchy carbs, artificial sweeteners. Mostly eggs for breakfast, salad and protein for lunch, stir fry and protein for dinner. I only drink water, tea or green tea. I snack on fruit and nuts.

I possibly have too much cheese and still drink wine once or twice a week but alcohol was never my trigger I am/was a nightmare for binging on sweet stuff and never ever felt full. The amount I can put away disgusts me but that was then, I am making an effort to be nice to myself and have given up the scales too.

I lost weight originally with slimming world but couldn’t maintain, the binges crept back in (and so did some/most of the weight) as I am a total addict. Cold turkey is my friend!
Feel fantastic now btw!!

bumhead · 06/12/2018 19:50

Well done to everyone who has managed to quit or at least conquer their sugar habit!
I have bought the Alan Car book and te I Quit Sugar programme. I just want to be free of this urge because it's making me feel shit in so many ways! I am going to take it day by day.
If anyone else fancies doing this with me then that would be ace!

After reading this thread the other day I’ve started to quit. Only 3rd day in but not fizzy drinks, no treats. My michea for work are all brought especially- I normally just throw something together. I’ve had a few people chortle that it’s xmas and. It a good time of year to do it. I figure if I can do it now I can do it anytime of the year.
