Adult teeth braces

Has anyone had them? As a teenager my dentist always told me that my canine tooth on one side would grow down, but it never has and still remains higher than the rest. The rest of my teeth are relatively ok - they’re not perfectly straight but if it wasn’t for this one tooth I’d leave them. However I’m very conscious of it and put my hand in front of my mouth when laughing and hate smiling for photos.

Has anyone had a brace as an adult, if so was it for a similar issues? I presume I’d need the fixed type as opposed to a removable plate. From experience, how long would it take and how much would it cost roughly?

I had invisalign 4 years ago. It cost around £3k and I wore the braces for a year. Before you confirm that you’re going ahead with it they show you a computerised model of what your teeth will look like at the end - and at each stage of the treatment, so if you’re not happy you don’t go ahead.

After finishing the treatment, I’ve been wearing a Vivera plastic retainer at night - initially evey night, but now I have a night or two off a week. I’m so pleased with my results and I’ve no regrets. You get so used to the retainers, you barely notice them after a while.

Will look into the Damon one.

Am tempted by Invisalign. I’d only get top ones but am unsure as to whether I could have them with having a high canine tooth. I suppose I could go for an initial consultation.

If you go for invisalign you might find that you have to have a brace on the bottom as well as the top, as your bite may change. They’ll advise you on that during the consultation.

I'm just about to start a course of Invisalign and have paid £3000 for it.

I looked into just getting the top ones done, but they suggested that I could be left with an over or under bite if I did that. It was only £500 cheaper, so not a massive difference in the grand scheme of it.

Retainers for life is pretty standard, I think a lot of adults are going for braces a second time around because they were told to only wear retainers for a couple of years etc when they were teens.

I have a permanent wire which so far has caused me no problems. I can't floss but that's more because the teeth are too tight than the wire. Also got a plastic one that looks like Invisalign, which I wear a couple or few nights a week.

I don’t know anyone who’s had one as an adult so it’s interesting to see that it’s actually quite a popular thing.

Good points about having the bottom braces too. Hadn’t thought about bite being affected etc. Wouldn’t want to end up with more problems in future.

@AhAgain I think that’s why I’m tempted by Invisalign, as apparently you just remove them to eat, brush your teeth, then pop them in again. Not as easy if you’re out admittedly, but at least it removes the issue of foods getting stuck.

Tried ringing a local orthodontist yesterday and typically they were on a training day!

I had braces in my 30’s best thing ever! I hated the gap I had but didn’t realise just how much it effected me until it was gone. It’s so lovely to be able to smile with confidence.

I have a permanent fixed retainer and a plastic one which I wear just one night per week. I had to wear it every day when the train tracks first came off . It’s the same as invisilign and I absolutely hate it. So spitty and slobbery to take out,a faff to keep clean. Made me very relieved that I went for the traditional braces.
