Christmas dinner with no oven

TheDramaLlama123 · 05/12/2018 22:18

I need ideas for Christmas dinner. We’ve been without a fully functioning cooker for 6 months, was hoping to get one by Christmas this year, but I can’t. We have one working hob and a microwave.

So need Christmas dinner ideas.

I can’t afford to eat out before you suggest that (I wish I could!)
It’s just me and three DC’s. they are sick of stew. I’m really depressed at the idea of not having Christmas dinner. Any ideas welcome!

@TheDramaLlama123

If you're anywhere near South Lanarkshire or Glasgow or close by then you can have a loan of my counter top oven and slow cooker as I'm not having Xmas dinner st my house.

Do you not have a relative/friend/neighbour who would let you cook a turkey/crown in their oven on Christmas eve? My parents always used to cook a large turkey the day before Christmas Day and then just carve it cold the next day and pour the hot gravy over it. Things like pigs in blankets can be done on the hob or buy already cooked ones and heat in the microwave.

I’d do steak on the hob. Parboil some nice veg, then when the steak is resting, griddle (if you have a griddle pan) or just fry them off to give some colour and bite.
Set them aside and make the gravy with the juices from the rested steaks, some red wine/shallots/garlic etc.
Serve with microwaved jacket potatoes.

would you consider having magret de canard - duck breast - you can do than in a pan ...

You can get microwavable pies from Iceland. If you could get an electric steamer (less than £20) you could do veg in that, microwaved pie and mash on the hob. If you can't get a steamer then tinned peas/sweetcorn can be done in the microwave in a couple of minutes.

A quick look on eBay came up with this-
I had one very similar and have cooked a fair sized chicken or joint in it. I could cook Yorkshire puds, cakes, even bread. Things near the top have to be well shielded with foil but it does the job.

I have a halogen oven for in the caravan- it's good but only cooks from the top so you have to turn things over. Use it for roasties, whole chicken (start upside down then turn over) pies , cheap and works pretty well.

Perhaps you could find one on Facebook selling group?

If you're in or near Edinburgh you can have my halogen oven for keeps, we haven't used it since we got a new kitchen fitted that has a super-efficient little oven. @ me if that's any good to you.

Or you could do dauphinois potatoes instead? Delish and indulgent and microwaveable

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/12/2018 13:22

Wilkos are selling 6L slow cookers in the sale for £16. That should be big enough for a decent joint of meat/chicken/small turkey.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 06/12/2018 13:22

Have you tried looking on freecycle and shpock. People seem to be giving away cookers quite often. You might find one to put your in for a while.

Gohackyourself · 06/12/2018 13:23

If your near Hertfordshire will happily cook for you

Bumblebee2302 · 06/12/2018 13:37

Whereabouts are you? Happy to help if in my neck of the woods

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 06/12/2018 17:21

Have PMd you to say you can have my halogen oven if you are near us but don't know if you've seen it. We are near the Devon/Somerset/Dorset borders, can deliver to a public place for safety reasons too.
