Web Design people - would you employ someone with these skills?

Wordpress
PHP
CSS
JQuery

Are employers after more these days.

DH been in web design for 20 years but I fear he hasn't moved with the times.

He tells me his skills are current, but looking at job adverts they want so much more.

That's probably okay for Web design maybe not Web development (two different things)

Unfortunately there is loads of competition out there so super hard to get work. There is also less of it around as loads of business from small companies is being taken by self build Web design services. I've been freelanceing for the last 10 years but I'm going to get out in the new year and find something else as work has got slower and clients are expecting more for less. Just not worth it anymore :( it's a big shame as I love it.

Tartpop · 05/12/2018 20:58

Thanks

He loves it too. The problem is that he has been lucky in the past and been handed some very good work. Buy outside of that he has no business skills to get more work in and doesn't put any effort into his own development. Doesn't even have his own website.

What is needed extra for a developer as this is that he thinks of himself as.

Is there anything he can self teach.

It is all he has ever done and has no other skills to change direction.

I work as a web developer, my companies list of requirements on thr job sites at the moment is:
C# / ASP.Net
Microsoft SQL Server 2012+
HTML 5 / CSS3
Javascript
jQuery / AngularJS / React / React Native
ASP.Net Core MVC
ASP.Net WebAPI

Could he get involved with some open source projects on github or develop his own site? Does he want to learn other languages or is he looking for a new job?

Tartpop · 05/12/2018 22:01

He's in the process of making his own site to help him get work in. He hasn't really needed it until now.

He had s site years ago.

He doesn't seem to want to learn anything new.

I just can't gel but think that recruiters are just going to overlook him.

It's so frustrating as I get blamed for being a nag if i tell him how to do his job when I know nothing about it.

Something needs to change he needs to get some money in soon.

Thats not great for this industry, every year theres a heap of young adults who look about far too young and make me feel ancient who've been developing since they were ridiculously young with a whole heap of languages, skills and experiences.
If he's not willing to keep upto date in Web developerment, he's really going to struggle with finding a job.

Tartpop · 05/12/2018 22:40

He seems to think his current skill set is enough. I disagree.

So very frustrating.

I don't know the first thing about web development, but I can see that things will be changing so fast that area.

How long does something like JavaScript take to learn? Is that something you can set teach.

What about Magento?

OP posts:
Preeeep · 05/12/2018 22:58

How long is a piece of string really, depends how much he wants to learn whatever he chose, but learning online is fine, are you sure he doesn't know javascript already? You said he knows jQuery which is a javascript library.

Ive never done work with Magneto but I believe it is written in php so he should be able to pick up that fine.

Tartpop · 05/12/2018 22:59

Apparently he works with Lamp stack and not really Microsoft.

Is that really restrictive?

OP posts:
Tartpop · 05/12/2018 23:01

Sorry, I didn't realise JQuery was similar to JavaScript.

There is a great Magento job going with someone he knows but doesn't think he can do it. Shame as it's a lot of money.

I mean, again depends on what he wants/your local area. Even the most obscure old languages have jobs for legacy apps, but not in all areas of thr country/industries, likewise the most 'in' languages have jobs but perhaps not in industry or location he wants.

If he knows the fundamentals, he'd be able to learn other stacks.

But honestly don't do his homework for him, either he has the skills/knowledge in which case he needs to apply for jobs and see if recruiters agree or he doesn't in which case he needs to think up plan b, be that a completely different career or self employed, kick him up thr butt if he needs it but no point trying to research javascript for him if he won't do it himself!

Tartpop · 05/12/2018 23:18

Thank you.

He doesn't know I'm asking anyone. He is self employed but currently has very little work on and it's been the same for 6 months.

He is looking for a full time work from home job or something local.

I restrict him somewhat as I run my own business and work all hours. He does school pick up etc.
