Help please- staircase too narrow to carry bath up!

Our bath was fitted by the previous owners and we haven’t thought about replacing the bathroom suite until recently. It suddenly struck me that both the bathroom doorway and also the staircase are narrower than average so it would leave only a couple of cm to spare at best.

Plus there’s a bend at the bottom of the staircase and very small landing at the top so will be tricky to get the new bath up. Old bath not such an issue as we could cut it to bits first.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to overcome this issue please? Do people remove bannisters to help, or is there some kind of gadget that can help? Or do some people remove upstairs windows and use a hoist?

We are thinking off adding an upstairs laundry room too, so really need to have a plan for getting bulky furniture up there.

When trying to get wardrobes and sofas into houses with small staircases, removal men sometimes use hoists and get them through windows on the upper floor. Would that possibly work in your situation?

If you are getting professionals in to do the bathroom for you, I would ask them for advice first - they must know any tricks going.

That’s a good idea thanks, I will ask companies when we get quotes and make them aware of the challenge.

We've got a tricky stairway with tight bends and low ceiling, and got a big deep squared-off showertray/bathtub thing up it - surprising how much space there is if you can put it vertically.

Otherwise through a window is your only recourse.

According to family history, my great great uncle died in his bedroom up some narrow twisty stairs. They took the coffin up on end, put him in it, then started to take him down on end as well. His wife wouldn't let them as she said it was disrespectful and his body might become damaged. So they took him back out of the coffin, got the coffin and body back downstairs and nailed him in again.

Sorry, slight thread derailment there, but narrow stairs can be an issue.
