Dd 6 struggling to read. Should I pay for help.

It's not clicking and she's in year 1. I'm worried about her falling behind.
The thing is she won't read with us. We have tried every which way, and she struggles. She still makes silly mistakes eg sounding word out but then saying the last few letters eg bedroom, room.

I'm wondering is there people for this age we could try and get her to read with who may have other strategies. Maybe phonics isn't working for her.

Or... Should I not worry yet...

My DD struggled in R and Y1 then something just clicked in Y2 and she raced through all the ORT levels, skipping a few on the way. She's now Y6 and an avid reader, reading well ahead of her expected age. (My challenge now is finding age-appropriate content for her level)

I think many just get there at different ages, like pp said, there is just a 'click' at some point and they just get it. but I do remember feeling wretched in Y1 when she really struggled and would get upset when I asked her to do her reading. I did wonder if she'd ever get there.

If her teacher is not concerned yet, I agree with all the advice above, we read to her daily at bedtime to make sure she understood enjoyment of books (yy to the Julia Donaldson set and to weekly outings to the library).

With guided reading I used to get her to do it (she was very reluctant) by taking in turns - you read that page, I'll read the next page, meaning in spite of her struggles she still got the story and it was teamwork.

I have older dd who was slightly late compared to class mates but you could sew the progress building up with other one it's stop start and what she seems to get one week the next she seems to forget. My other dd was always talking about tricky tri graphs etc.

Younger never mentions any phonics at all.

We have a house stuffed full of books when dd 2 was little she carried a book with her as a comforter as she always saw dd 1 with books 😁. She doesn't like story cds.

Why not get some “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books out of the library - this series is what got my DD into reading.

I'm a bit late to this so someone may have suggested this already, but have you had her eyes checked?

My older dd is a proper little bookworm now, my dad bought her books and sent them through the post and she loved getting little parcels and this developed into a love for books and reading.
