Stupid question about baby bottles when out and about...

New mum here and utterly clueless!

DD is formula fed, but I'm confused about how I would feed her when out and about if I were to use our bottles and formula powder instead of the ready-made-up ones - after sterilising the bottles, how would I store them when going out? Is it possible to sterilise them, add in the boiled water before leaving, and then just make up the formula when needed?

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about all this stuff so please be gentle if the answer is obvious!

Hmmm. I wonder why they say not to use boiling water here then? Differences in manufacturing maybe? They’re usually much much stricter here than the UK on everything (both Vicks and Bonjela are banned for example.)

There is no way to make formula powder sterile though. The WHO says to use water over 70 degrees so it's not just a UK guidance

When my dc were babies, I used to fill the bottle with cooled boiled water then just add the formula. I am aware that this goes against current advice though

Me too. In fact I think I added hot water and then by the time I came to add the powder it had cooled to drinkable temperature. He was older by then though (over 6 months I'd guess) so he was lying on the floor putting unsterilised things in his mouth. When we were on holiday when he was 5 months old I used some cartons.

I understand the whole making sure water is above 70 degree for the formula powder etc. I worked in childcare in the Uk for many years as followed the guidelines

However, like the swedish poster above, i now live abroad, where the same brands they sell in the Uk dont say it needs to be mixed with hot water. I wonder why?

This is from the Aptamil own website here (central europe) for example on how to safely make a bottle:
1)Bring the drinking water to a boil, allow to cool to about 40 ° C (place in the water bath for faster cooling).
2) Fill the required amount of water into the vial according to the dosage table.
3)Use only the measuring spoon included with this package. Strip off the full measuring spoon on the installed device.
4)Fill the required quantity of powder (= number of measuring spoons according to the dosage table) into the bottle.
5)Close bottle with shaking cap and shake vigorously. Add the remaining water and shake again. Then attach the nipple to the bottle.
6)Cool to serving temperature (about 37 ° C), check temperature.

So it seems the same instructions as sweden of 40 degrees, not 70+.

It's bizarre as UK aptamil site says:

Boil 1 litre of fresh water.Leave kettle to cool for 30 minutes and no longer (allowing the water to reach 70°C once cooled from boiling).Measure the required amount of water (refer to feeding guide) into a sterilised bottle. Be careful of scalding. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

When out with baby this time last year I took a baby bottle filled with boiled water, partly cooled, and would add the formula powder and shake when needed.

It was then about the right temperature for drinking as my baby wouldn't drink cold milk.

The formula I used said not to use boiling water on it as it kills the added probiotics.

Why don't you just take out a few ready to feed bottles..
That way you can just use them when you need them.
I have never pre made bottles when out. If a bottle is made with the powder by you at home, it has to be used within one hour.

Sunisshining5346 · 05/12/2018 10:54

And it's not a stupid question...there are so many guidelines when it comes to babies, it can all be overwhelming! And you will be told different things by hundreds of different people..it's all very confusing being a parent!
