For the love of God, will dd’s pierced ears ever clear up?

She had them done in fucking April. Healed ok to start with but the last few months they’ve been sore.

Tried various different metals, currently wearing titanium studs. Have to take them out twice a week for PE and it’s hurting her to put them back in. Backs of ears are crusty.

This morning one bled when I took the earring out.

We’ve also tried prontolind spray from Amazon but keep forgetting to apply regularly.

What shall we do? Give up and let them close up?

Yes, the retainers can go in from the front. Even if you went with the labret style, they could be put in from the front.

I've also used nail files to file down the size of the visible area of the retainer when I've worn them to make them less visible.... Works well! Not when you're wearing them of course!

My daughter's also took ages to heal in the end we changed studs for hoops and they healed quickly and she has had no trouble since. At one point the back of the stud was embedded in the back of her ear... It was grim !

foona I did wonder about hoops, they leave the back of the ear exposed which aids healing. The current studs are titanium but they have big clunky butterflies which I don’t think are helping.

Just remembered I bought some plastic retainers which we’ve never used, these:

Got my ears done when i was 5 - sore infected ears for ever. Nearly 50 and still can’t eear earrings all the time.

MulticolourMophead · 04/12/2018 22:09

I had a tragus piercing done 2 weeks ago, and the piercer advised warm water to bath only, no salt water or anything else. Also no twisting of the earring or any touching at all.

I have a nickel allergy, I put tape over the rivets in jeans etc, where it touches skin. But I've had no problems with the labrets used by the piercer, or with the titanium hoop I currently sport in the other tragus. I can wear gold and silver but not much else. I will replace a cheap metal hook with a silver hook on a pair of costume earrings I like, so I can largely wear what I like.

madcatladyforever · 04/12/2018 22:13

Mine never cleared up either, not properly. Eventually they did heal with top quality gold rings but even now 45 years after I had them done I have to take them out at night or they go crusty again.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/12/2018 22:14

I've got 4 in each ear, including both tragus. DD had her first lobe set done for her 6th birthday and I barely touched them. I just dropped a few drops of salt water over them once a day (if that) and didn't touch them. They healed fine.
In my experience, the problem is she has to keep taking them out. Taking them out or twisting them only undoes all the healing. It sort of breaks the repair the skin is trying to make if that makes sense.

Possibly no use at all, but I am miserably, violently allergic to titanium (had my ears pierced when I was 13, so —35– 8 yrs ago). My piercings got infected, then were itchy, weepy, and generally horrid. Much experimentation later, it turns out I am allergic to everything except gold and silver. Worth trying?

mysteryfairy · 04/12/2018 23:19

My DD ended up on a course of antibiotics as a result of an infected piercing, I was cross with her for wasting NHS time and money. Even worse her friend managed to get so badly infected she spent 5 nights in hospital on iv antibiotics. My ears are pierced but after those two experiences which were both ears (but not normal lobe piercing) I would never encourage anyone to persevere if reacting badly.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 04/12/2018 23:28

One of mine never healed, I have a total allergy to metal. But oddly one did, so I spotted a single earring for years until I gave up.

VanGoghsDog · 04/12/2018 23:32

Can she put plasters over them for PE?

SpoonBlender · 04/12/2018 23:35

"she says it stings"

Well, there's your answer. She's letting them filth up and no wonder they're not healing. It's nothing to do with taking them out for PE - I mean it won't be helping, but it's not why they're being problematic.

She needs to keep them clean, and they'll be fine in a month. Dozy teenagers Hmm

Tiredandemosh · 04/12/2018 23:47

I had my tragus done in August and it’s still sore and tender, weeping ocasionally too. Any idea when it will settle? I’ve left the titanium labret in that it was pierced with but I’m keen to change it.

llangennith · 05/12/2018 00:05

Salt water shouldn't sting. Take them out for a while. Let them heal and try again when they've healed. Might need to have them pierced again.

pinkyredrose · 05/12/2018 10:56

She needs to keep them in, put plasters on for pe, use salt water soaks and never touch without washing her hands, never put the jewellery back without cleaning it. What is she doing with the jewellery when she takes it out? Keep it clean and leave it alone.

twosoups1972 · 05/12/2018 23:55

Thank you all, I do agree it's the taking them in and out that's aggravating them. Not sure if the school will allow them to be covered rather than removed for PE.
