Anyone with an Iphone 5S? I have some questions.

My Dd has wanted a phone for ages and we've agreed she can have one for Christmas. She desperately wants an Iphone.
I've had a look and I got a reconditioned 5s for a reasonable price. Money is tight and I also don't think kids need top of the range tech. When I mentioned it to her she was really pleased.
Now some of the kids in her class have been telling her it's a rubbish phone, the messaging doesn't work and so on.
Is there any truth in it?
She is so easily led and their is one girl in particular who seems to love putting Dd down.
I don't really have the budget for anything newer but I don't want to waste money on something that doesn't work properly.

Have a look on musicmagpie for reconditioned phones (grade A+) start at reasonable prices.

I would go for at least an Iphone SE (basically a 6s in a small body) as it will get updates for another year or two, failing that a 6/7/8 if your budget will reach.

Have you considered a non-apple smartphone, imo, much better value at the budget end of the market....

Make sure your daughter is past worrying about having the latest model. It's just stuff and there will always be materialistic kids and adults around.

Equally having the latest phone doesn't mean you are materialistic.

I worked in apple and I wouldn't recommend it. The older phones don't support the newer software updates and become redundant over time. Also refurbished phones normally only have a 90 day parts warranty rather than a consumer warranty. Would it be possible for you guys to upgrade one of your mobile plans and give her your old phone?

Pinkyyy · 05/12/2018 09:28

I gave my old 5S to my DB when he broke his phone to use as a temporary one until he bought a replacement, it works absolutely fine so he is still using it 6 months later with no issues. (He's not a CF I told him to keep it)

christmasisuponus · 05/12/2018 09:34

I think you've been ripped off paying £150 for a 5S Shock you can get them half the price if not less.

NationalShiteDay · 05/12/2018 09:38

I love these threads. They show how ridiculous life can get keeping up with the Jones.

I have a 5s 16GB. I bought it second hand a couple of years ago for £70 and it's still going strong. No issues with it at all. DH's 6 on the other hand is shit.

I earn £££ btw so could easily afford a better handset. This one is great though so I've no reason to upgrade.

Love that kids who don't earn a penny are looking down on 5s Hmm that's all sorts of wrong.

Stop telling the OP she has been ripped off. The UK has unusually cheap mobile prices and she doesn’t live in the UK.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 05/12/2018 09:49

Why are so few people reading the OP’s posts?

She is not in the UK. She is paying in her local currency, in a market where phones are significantly more expensive

tabulahrasa · 05/12/2018 10:51

Oh and the whole not supporting software updates...

I rarely update my software anyway, neither of mine is running IOS12

Yet everything works fine...

I’ve always bought whichever model is cheaper because new ones have come out, never bother to update IOS, it takes forever and I can’t be bothered. They always work and I never have any issues putting new apps on.

They always work fine, the shortest any of mine has lasted is 2 years, but I killed that with water.

spiderlight · 05/12/2018 10:51

Myson has just been given a friend's old 5s and he loves it. Messaging works absolutely fine (texts and WhatsApp) and he's downloaded all the games he wants onto it. He's getting a newer one for his birthday next year so he can play Fortnite but he's perfectly happy with the 5S for now.

Pinkkahori · 05/12/2018 14:34

Thanks everyone.
Not being in the UK is a major factor here.
Phones and bill pay pricing plans are very expensive so our budget will only stretch to an older model on Pay as you Go.
She is still in Primary school, not a high powered executive and I think she doesn't need an expensive phone.
The 5S arrived today and I have started setting it up. It seems like a nice little phone although may be smaller than dd is expecting.
I had a good talk with her last night and I think she is more open to giving it a go.

Honestly? I don't think it'd last long. I have an iPhone7 which works fine but is pretty crap now in comparison to the iPhone8 and iPhoneX coming out. I struggled when I had the iphone5 at the end of 2016 because of how slow it was so it can't be great now.

empmalswa · 05/12/2018 14:39

tabula

That's fine. You don't have to update your software. Realistically though, teens use more apps that will require up to date software so it is something to be mindful of when choosing a handset

ernjas · 05/12/2018 14:40

Saying that, I probably wouldn't pay for me than a 5S for a primary school aged child! Smile

tabulahrasa · 05/12/2018 14:48

“teens use more apps that will require up to date software“

Don’t see how tbh, well I suppose my games might be different ones... but they run all the social media apps, Spotify, Netflix, plus my old people ones like kindle, lol and ones I need for work.

Facebook can sometimes get a bit demanding about updating IOS, but it still works and that tends to be a year or so after I’ve not updated it and teenagers use that less than the others anyway.

empmalswa · 05/12/2018 14:51

Oh well that's great then.

nails2018 · 05/12/2018 14:52

My 5s is fine.

SpoonBlender · 06/12/2018 02:12

The next update - iOS 13 - isn't due until November 2019, with the next round of new phones @empmalswa. Going by the specs of the 5s it's quite likely 13 will support it but that is a guess.

So there's at least two years of life in that 5s from an updates POV. I know people still using a 4s, and that stopped getting updates four years ago!

SpoonBlender · 06/12/2018 02:13

@emjas The 5s is faster with iOS 12 than it was with 10 or 11. Which is nice.
