Ovo billing error, please help! My credit gone.

Has anyone had this?

We have been paying £150 per month for electricity all year and there was a nice credit of £700 to see us through the winter.

Ovo emailed us today to say we have been under paying since 2016 due to a billing error and we now owe Ovo £350.

They said that they will refund the £350 as it was their error and as our 2-year deal has finished we need to renegotiate a new plan.

Has his happened to anyone? So much for smart meters.

In the wider view you've done quite well out of it - £350 of free fuel.

Wingbing · 04/12/2018 18:12

Oh I hadn’t thought of it like that.

Just disappointed the £700 we thought we had was now gone. Guess there is a silver lining. Electricity is bloody expensive.

Yeah I guess thank your lucky stars they're not chasing you for £350.

greyspottedgoose · 04/12/2018 18:23

Paying £150 a month for electricity (and underpaying!!) seems a lot of money 😖

Jenb2104 · 04/12/2018 18:25

We had a similar issue with a different company. We owed over £600 which we are now having to pay back in installments so I would say you've been quite lucky.

maskingtape · 04/12/2018 18:30

Does it seem likely you've been underpaying as more than £150 seems an awful lot. Mine is around £50 pm. Is your house huge, very old, under insulated and you have a large family?

GreenTulips · 04/12/2018 18:33

Sorry - but you signed up for a two year deal and now this has ended they want to go back on the deal and make you pay more?

I'd challenge it

Pinkprincess1978 · 04/12/2018 18:44

Wow that's a lot! We pay I think £70 a month for both gas and electricity so to pay £150 a month seems huge.

BoooForYou · 04/12/2018 18:51

I pay £49 a month for both combined with Bulb.
They sent me a monthly statement and said in October we had used £555.73. I nearly died! I contacted them and said there was no way and they've just apologised and said they were indeed wrong.
What I would suggest as £150 for electric alone seems incredibly high- even Npower who are the biggest rip off going wanted me to pay £80 (3 bed terrace) for electric. I would ask what the standard average is for homes the same as yours they cover, then ask for a detailed breakdown of your readings over the year.

Cranky17 · 04/12/2018 18:51

Have you been supplying meter reading?
&3950 for two years has is huge. What type of house are you in?

Wingbing · 04/12/2018 19:25

A small 2 bed bungalow. We have two wall heaters but use a wood burner often in winter. This also heats the water. We have an immersion heater on the rest of the time

No central heating and we have no mains gas.

We also have a smart meter. We have queried why it’s so high many times but never get anywhere.

GreenTulips · 04/12/2018 19:49

Move suppliers

Do a check online to see a comparison

Check your meter - turn every thing off and see what happens

Kezzie200 · 04/12/2018 20:11

Have they explained the billing error? So you can work out if they are right

Cranky17 · 04/12/2018 21:10

Do you have you immersion heater on all the time?

Have you googled smart meters giving false readings , however the whole point of the smart meters was to stop estimated bills

DobbinsVeil · 04/12/2018 21:23

have they given you the billing information?

They can't back-bill beyond 12 months, so agreeing to waive the £350 is probably because they actually aren't allowed to claim it back.

I'd definitely look into it further.

Wingbing · 05/12/2018 13:58

I ran them, they made a mistake. We are now £900 in credit!

OP posts:
DobbinsVeil · 05/12/2018 14:21

Now that's a brilliant update! Glad it was easily sorted.

Avrannakern · 05/12/2018 14:24

Will they be reducing your bill to a normal amount once you've used up that credit?

Wingbing · 05/12/2018 18:18

We’re going to have some back then use the rest to cover additional heating in winter.

We will use it to pay for the septic tank to be emptied so all works out. Rural living is great but sometimes extra outlays crop up.

SpoonBlender · 06/12/2018 02:21

WTF! How rubbish are they? You should move to someone else. Check out who the best prices are on moneysavingexpert or similar.

After you've got your several hundred quid back :D

Redcherries · 06/12/2018 07:33

We had the same thing with our provider, I forget who as Dh deals with the bill. Our monthly payment jumped up over £100. They had been to do readings, I’d let them into the garage to do it so knew 100% but they said they had none on record for 2 years! It’s really frustrating.
