Iron Baby

I’ve just been reading how toddlers need 6.9mg of Iron a day. The article then goes on to say that good sources are half a chicken breast (0.3mg), baked beans (0.3mg), and wholemeal bread is (0.6mg). How on earth is it then possible for a toddler to get enough iron – surely they aren’t eating 11.5 chicken breasts or 12 slices of bread!

Even if they had fortified cereal at 2.3mg that would leave them needing 8 chicken breasts of slices of bread. It goes on to say that up to a half of children are deficient – I’m bloody surprised it’s not 100%!

Thank goodness you didn't want advice on ironing your baby.

That’s why babies/toddlers are advised to take a multivitamin after weaning.

A medium baked potato with a mild beef chilli (beef mince and beans) would give you over 7mg of iron. If the toddler only eats a half portion and fortified cereal for breakfast they'd get more than 6.9mg

It's easy to do as a one off if you eat red meat and fortified cereal. Hard to plan in every day.
