I've just seen a post on fb about someone getting Christmas carollers last night! Do people still do this Shock

We haven't had any for years.

IIRC some years back there used to be the Rotary Club/Round Table coming round playing Christmas carol tapes blaring out of a loudspeaker; I always thought it was a bit of a swizz even though they collect for good causes!

I think there might be an organised group of carol singers for a few hours on one Saturday on our local high street by the Christmas tree, collecting for charity.

NancyDonahue · 04/12/2018 07:54

Not for about 20 years I think!
We used to get the Salvation Army band going around the streets but that seems to have stopped now.

Toomanybaubles · 04/12/2018 07:56

Yes, we also get a Santa in a sleigh with lot of elves playing Christmas music handing out sweets and collecting for a local charity. Such fun, so well done.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 04/12/2018 08:05

Nothing round here. At our old house we got the Lions coming round on their flatbed with Santa and the loud music collecting money but I agree that it was a swizz and more of a nuisance than anything else. (They used to appear at 8/8.30pm in a street full of pre-schoolers.)

The only carolling I ever see now is organised events with the local brass band and maybe a few locals from churches singing. (Our local Sainsbury’s has the brass band every weekend in Dec and there is an event this coming weekend outside a local hotel.)

My primary aged DC are all going carol singing to care homes in the area but that’s it. When I was a kid we went and sang in department stores, at the market, in the town centre etc. Our church used to also organise small groups to go properly carol singing and knocking on doors. I used to love doing it. It was like a much nicer version of Halloween! We always came away with copious amounts of quality street, mince pies and even selection boxes for the kids!

No groups of carol singers for a while but we do have a visit from Father Christmas with 'elves' collecting for charity, music and a brightly lit trailer (the local Lions organise this). Our area's turn was last night and my teenager did stick her head out of the door to watch it go past - years ago she would have been rushing out and following them up the road!

My mums village still has carollers, as much as it is lovely and heart warming but when they knock on the door.... its a very awkward moment of like...just standing, smiling maybe the odd bop from side to side if its a jolly song..

Bigonesmallone3 · 04/12/2018 09:43

Last year I had some on the 1st of December..
I felt like screaming REALLY and slamming the door.. but I stood there and smiled sweetly then gave them a few pound

EllaDownTheLane · 04/12/2018 09:46

Yes our little village have carollers on the 21st, it’s lovely and they raise money for local events.

Namelesswonder · 04/12/2018 09:46

Our local residents association organize carol singers to go round the local houses. Money is collected for charity. Lots of local families (adults and children) join in. Very Christmassy

PoisonousSmurf · 04/12/2018 16:33

Much more fun in South Wales...

OneStepMoreFun · 04/12/2018 17:19

We do. Our local scout brass band walks the streets of our village with some carol singers every year. I love it. They just come and stand under a street lamp in each street (they don't knock on every door) and everyone comes out to listen and give the grown ups mulled wine and the kids cocoa. It's like something out of Dickens.

whitecatsandblackcats · 04/12/2018 18:11

We do on my road. Those neighbours that are up for it gather at someones house for mulled wine and mince pies and then we go up and down the road stopping under lampposts to sing. We don't knock on any doors though and I'm not sure how many neighbours are left to hear the carols as quite a lot of us are out singing them! We just do it for fun.

RomanyRoots · 04/12/2018 18:15

Everything here is organised and in the town centre, usually during the day.
Nobody comes round the streets and nobody door to door carolling.
As kids we used to earn good pocket money, you got more if you had an instrument as well. Grin

Babdoc · 04/12/2018 18:18

Yes of course! I’m going carol singing round our village as usual this year with the rest of our congregation from the parish church. It’s magical to sing “Silent Night” under the stars on a frosty village street, or a rousing Hark the Herald Angels to get us all going.
If I’ve had enough mulled wine first, I’ll even try a descant for Once in Royal David’s City!
Last year a police car pulled up. We feared the cop was going to object to us singing without a licence, but no - he put his flashing blue lights on to look festive, sang along and took selfies! Lovely!

RomanyRoots · 04/12/2018 18:22

Babdoc

I wish I was in your village and what a lovely story.
My dd would be singing with you, I'd be humming as really can't sing.

gladiatorgirl · 04/12/2018 18:24

We get the local church choir on the weekend before the big day. Also get Salvation Army in the town centre. It always brings a tear to the eye even though I'm not a bit religious.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 04/12/2018 18:25

No not round here

Gingefringe · 04/12/2018 19:27

My DD and her friends used to go carol singing around a local estate where there were quite a few elderly residents. The residents loved it and DD always made a few quid.
I used to go carol singing when I was in the girl guides but we had to stop after one year stomping through someone's newly laid (and wet) concrete drive in the dark - that didn't go down too well as there were about 20 of us.

HavelockVetinari · 04/12/2018 19:34

My family always go carol singing in my parents' very "naice" neighbourhood, 95% of people are made up about it, those that aren't don't answer the door (we sing a verse before ringing/knocking to give people a get-out clause). It's always in aid of the local hospice that provides respite care for families with children who have SEN and severe health problems. We raise loads, it's fun, no one has to give if they don't want to.

Milly848 · 04/12/2018 19:53

It may have been a roundtable group or similar. They go round with a sleigh, singing carols to collect money for charity

brizzledrizzle · 04/12/2018 20:19

No, none for years. We tend not to get anybody calling at our house because all the rooms we use are at the back so no lights can be seen from the road and they can't tell if we are in or not.

YourMilkshakeIsBetterThanMine · 04/12/2018 20:22

Every year it happens and every year we forget and open the door. Teenagers singing for cash.

Foslady · 04/12/2018 20:28

I had mother and daughter I presume last year, aged about 30 and 50 both out of fine and out of time and unsure if pisses or high!

Tjzmummabear · 04/12/2018 20:49

no last time was about 8 years ago... and they were young kids.
