Has anyone tried Seedlip? as an alternative to gin?

I want to cut out some alcohol and calories. I was in a cook shop back in the summer and they were selling bottles of Seedlip which is apparently a botanical non alcoholic drink that you can add to Mixers like tonic.

Any one tried it? Is it rank?

The garden one is rancid - taste like mud and peas

The spicy one is similar to Gordon's gin

brownmouse · 04/12/2018 07:44

I tried this and couldn't believe how rank it was. Paid £10 in a restaurant! WHY???? They don't even pay the alcohol tax! WTF is the price about??

AlexanderHamilton · 04/12/2018 07:50

Dh is a gin lover but is unable to drink alcohol for medical reasons.

The normal Seedlip he says is awful but he has asked for a bottle of the spicy one for Christmas.

BigGreenOlives · 04/12/2018 07:52

I agree brownmouse, how can they charge so much when there’s no alcohol tax. They must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Delatron · 04/12/2018 08:09

I don’t get why it’s so expensive.
I would have been handy when I was pregnant and got sick of sugary drinks though.

Nothing like gin, overpriced rubbish

Waggily · 04/12/2018 08:20

Sainsbury do their own version which is a bit more gin-like in taste and marginally cheaper. It’s been handy through pregnancy when you want to pretend your a grown up.

fussychica · 04/12/2018 09:23

Agree re Angastura bitters with tonic, makes an excellent adult drink. Also like Bottle Green spritzers or their Cordials with tonic. I think lots of the flavoured tonics also work fine without gin, especially with appropriate garnishes.

I love Gin but don't drink at least 3 nights a week these days so always looking for grown up alternatives to alcohol.

SmallYappyTypeDog · 04/12/2018 09:24

Tesco also do a non alcoholic G&T in a can, don't get the slimline one though!

fussychica · 04/12/2018 09:26

Wow the Ginsin is an amazing price. Can't believe I've never seen it before as it's Spanish. Ordering now!

halcyondays · 04/12/2018 09:27

Ridiculously overpriced, I'd just drink tonic or elderflower if not drinking alcohol.

NotAColdWomanHenry · 04/12/2018 09:35

I bought the garden one and to me it tastes like peas and cucumbers, but if you have it with a nice tonic and lemon slice it is fairly convincing, but not so great that I have it often. It is expensive, and I think they should do smaller bottles. I want to try the spice one now but can't get over the price for something I might not like much.

I can't have much alcohol because of long-term medication, and I've tried all sorts. I really like Sainsbury's alcohol-free "champagne" and San Miguel 0.0% is the best lager IMO.

cookingteaforsix · 04/12/2018 10:07

Its a strange taste. It's the equivalent to alcohol free wine which is grim.

It's missing a few vital notes. I made a sugar syrup and added a bit and it improved enough to sip.

It's expensive and tastes as though much of the base notes are absent.

Disappointing, overrated, and very expensive. I'd spend the money on top end lemonades and mixers.

Give this one a miss.

toastfiend · 04/12/2018 10:47

I really like it!

The garden one is my favourite but the citrus and spice ones are both very good. Being pregnant I'm so bored of the usual sugary soft drinks. This feels more grown up and much more refreshing. It is expensive, but it's a concentrated flavour so you only need a relatively small amount (comparative to gin, where my doubles look more like quadruples!) so we find it lasts a long time at home, even with both DH and I drinking it. I definitely wouldn't want sugar added to it, the lack of sugar is one of the key reasons that I like it. I can see that it would be an acquired taste though.

toastfiend · 04/12/2018 10:49

Do make sure you dilute it well, I have had a few friends who thought they hated it but they were drinking it with just a dash of tonic, more like a wine spritzer. It's not a drink to have neat, but with plenty of good tonic water, or even plain sparkling water, I think it adds a really refreshing edge.

MinorProphet · 04/12/2018 10:51

Grim. Horrible aftertaste. Better just having straight tonic with lemon or lime.

AlmaCogansFrockFan · 04/12/2018 13:33

I'd read about it and was curious so when it was on the drinks menu at my local Zizzi's I tried it and thought it was worth getting a bottle in (the garden version) -fortunately it was on special offer when I did my online shop. Even with that reduction it seemed pricey by comparison with real gin, and have since bought a duty-free bottle of rhubarb and ginger gin! Glad I saw this thread as I've looked at the delicious drinks site and am intrigued by the non-alcoholic sparkling rose, so may be trying some of their fizz!

MinorProphet · 04/12/2018 16:49

A REALLY nice non alcoholic g&t substitute is Belvoir Juniper and Tonic. Lush.

I also like Kopparberg non alcoholic fruity ciders and plain sparkling water.

Winlinbin · 04/12/2018 21:02

I think it’s vile. It tastes a bit like root beer which I also dislike. I bought a bottle, tried it once and it’s not been touched since.

My current non-alcoholic fallback is water infused with cucumber. I actually had that in preference to a glass of wine on Saturday night.

Rachie1986 · 04/12/2018 21:04

I love it! With fevertree tonic tastes like gin to me..

bigbluebus · 04/12/2018 21:27

I tried it when a friend had a bottle. It was OK but I couldn't believe how much it cost! I recently bought some botanic 'tea bag' things which you put in 1 ltr of tonic and it flavours it like gin. They were about £4 for a box of 10. Saw something similar in Lakeland today.

pitterpatterrain · 04/12/2018 21:29

I like it but it is completely overpriced to buy a bottle for home
