Take child to hospital or go alone

Just that really, I am due any day now and it’s my second so have no idea how quick the process may end up being! Nearest family is 45mins away and they are primed and ready but if I need to go to hospital in the middle of the night or before they could arrive, would you take your child with you (they are 5) or go alone and have husband meet you there once family have arrived. I want her to go to a school as normal and not be too disrupted. Neighbours and other friends are not an option in middle of night. I am sure I will have time to sort things out like with my first pregnancy but just wondered what other people have done

Have you got a neighbour or close friend that who trust who you could call to sit at home whilst oh went with you?? Otherwise I would leave oh and go by yourself and get him to join when he can.

Youmadorwhat · 03/12/2018 08:53

Sorry I just read your post fully! Why are they not an option have you asked??

Stormwhale · 03/12/2018 08:55

Go alone and have husband follow when family arrive. That is the least disruptive for your dc1. It would be unfair to drag them to the hospital in the middle of the night when family could be there in 45 minutes.

My parents live 30 mins away. My waters broke at 4am. I had a bag packed for my eldest (2yr old). My husband drove him over to theirs straight away as I had a meconium showing so had to go into the hospital. I hadn’t given birth before so I didn’t want my eldest (adopted) to be around just in case.
I thought I would have ages as it was my first pregnancy, I had a shower and ate some cereal, but by the time he came back I wanted to start pushing!
Got to the hospital fully dilated.
With your child being older taking them to hospital maybe more of an option.

Leave your child at home with DH.
Who would look after DD at the hospital? DH, so he wont be with you if he has to care for a 5 year old. So DH and DD might as well stay at home.

Yeah I am more inclined I go alone. It’s more a just in case, pretty sure it would all get figured out. Not going to ask neighbours I barely know and nor does she! Most friends I know have kids and would not wake them in middle of night.. we are fairly new to area so don’t have lots of people we could call on. I would much rather just go on my own. Husband doesn’t drive and as mentioned kid needs to be in school next day. So PIL need to come to us. Just checking I am not entirely mad to be happy to go to hospital on my own.. it’s weird how much I am obsessing that my first child will be ok ha ha

How would you get there alone in labour? Surely it wouldn’t be safe to drive yourself if you’ve got to the stage where you need to be in the hospital?

Iwannabail · 03/12/2018 10:28

Taxi! It’s the only way I am getting their as husband does not drive.

Please know this, I have kids and honestly wouldn't mind being woken in the middle of the night to watch someone's child for a while until their grandparents could pick them up, just drop them off on your way to the hospital. It's not like you're going to be making a habit of it. You won't know until you ask but I doubt many people would say no.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 15/12/2018 21:34

The midwives won't let your 5 year old in anyway. They will have your husband and child outside so he would miss the birth anyway.
Better to have him wait at home and follow on. Try not to worry too much. These things tend to work out fine. (I'm a midwife).

For my second child i got dropped at hospital, my dp was still dropping little one at grandparents and I had the baby. He missed it. - it was a lovely peaceful birth with a lovely midwife. DP still bonded with daughter. Compared to first birth which was 48 hours followed by E-CS it was a dream.

thomasthecheekyone · 16/12/2018 08:31

I second what @DementedO1 said. I'd happily be woken at anytime to help out.

Pinkprincess1978 · 16/12/2018 09:31

We waited for family and I very nearly had to give birth at home. I stupidly left it as late as I could (it was early morning so left calling until 5am) thinking they would just hop in the car and come. No they got showered, dressed, breakfast etc. Had to call my Aunty in the end as 40 mins after we had first called they still hadn't left and lived 30 mins away.

We asked a neighbour. It was 4am and our nanny was primed to come at 6am in an emergency, and the Dad across the road thought it was all v exciting and bounded over in his dressing gown and I suppose just dozed on the sofa til nanny arrived. (We have no family in this country and needed a part time nanny when the kids were small)
