What would you say is a fair price for a smallhome made mince pie?
Don't want to sell them too cheap but don't want to overcharge so asking for opinions.

MN is such a raise to the bottom on these threads.

I don't agree it's a race to the bottom. The OP admits herself that the mince pies are small, and it's a school fayre so not usually a high spending audience. So whilst £1 might be reasonable in a cafe, I would consider it expensive for a single mince pie in a school hall.

HironsBirons · 03/12/2018 10:21

I’d pay around 50p each. Not much more than that for just a mince pie.

Fairenuff · 03/12/2018 10:23

Parents are always being asked for £1 here, 50p there. Some will have three children in one school. They cannot be expected to fork out £££s for cakes that they could buy much cheaper if they wanted to. You have to know your audience or else the cakes just won't sell.

Many children will not be given any money because their families just can't afford it so those children will either get a free cake or staff will pay on their behalf.

Our school usually sells 4 homemade cakes for £1. Individualy 50p

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 03/12/2018 10:25

Would be 25p max at our school, no matter how nice.

Sunshineonleaf · 03/12/2018 10:26

I think it depends whether it's a cake stall or whether you are selling them with cups of tea.
Cake stall where people might buy half a dozen - 25 to 30p
With a cup of tea - 50p.

You don't want anything left unsold and no-one will pay 75p for a single mince pie.

I am a veteran of school and village hall fayres by the way Grin

Flamingosnbears · 03/12/2018 10:29

I think 50p-£1 is a reasonable price

wotsittoyou · 03/12/2018 10:40

£2.50-£3 Shock

There are five of us. There's no way in a million years that I'd pay £15 for us to eat a mince pie while walking around a school fair. Who would?

.50p should mean that the school doesn't get back less than you paid out and they're affordable for most families, so they don't go to waste.

Elfinablender · 03/12/2018 10:48

I think there is some false logic in charging too little. If someone makes a batch of mince pies to be sold off at less than the cost of the ingredients it devalues their time and they are more likely to just bring in shop bought offerings. Then, as a potential customer, there is less incentive to attend/ buy/ endure the chaos of an overheated andcramped school hall to pick up a few mince pies you could have thrown in the basket at Tesco.

TeenTimesTwo · 03/12/2018 10:49

50p
40p minimum, not worth the effort otherwise.

Nothing ending in 5p as they are a nightmare for the treasurer!

YourMilkshakeIsBetterThanMine · 03/12/2018 11:04

elfinablender yes, that's what is happening at DD's school. I make a couple of batches of decent cupcakes for each cake sale and the school sells all cakes for 20p regardless of size or whether homemade/shopbought. So it's 20p for one of those tiny fairy cakes from Aldi or 20p for a proper muffin-sized cupcake with piped frosting and decoration etc. I make them anyway because DD enjoys baking with me and I don't want to have to eat them myself after but very few people bother now. Who'd want to spend £10 to raise £4? But a lot of families in our area can't spend £1 per cake for 3, 4 or 5 kids and school fairs are as much about community as fund raising.

PylonsPylonsPylons · 03/12/2018 20:09

Thanks for all the responses. They cost less than 10p each to make and sold well at 50p.
