What to do with old knickers

About to have a cull of all worn out undies and don't want to just fling them in the bin. The council take clothes in the black box but it says 'usable clothing' on their website so I'm assuming that doesnt include gross old knickers Grin Does anyone know what I should do with them?

And cotton. So you can fuck off with your angry face! 😂

Jaxtellerswife · 03/12/2018 08:10

I'm all for trying to prevent filling up landfill but come onHmmit's old pants.

AutumnCrow · 03/12/2018 08:25

Millions and millions of old pants is a pant mountain though.

Here you go, Edthebear

Cheers - interesting read.

However for pants I'd stick with the bin. Do you really want some poor sod handling your used knickers!Blush

AutumnCrow · 03/12/2018 09:34

I launder them first!

Plus, the Council here will not accept any textiles in the waste collection any more. They must be recycled.

CurbsideProphet · 03/12/2018 09:37

My local charity shop sells "rags" for recycling. So long as everything in the"rag bag" is clean then it's ok.

CurbsideProphet · 03/12/2018 09:38

Btw I hand the bag over saying "this is all for recycling", so they don't actually need to go empty it all out.

Lambethmum · 03/12/2018 09:40

Chris Carey banks still collect anything - Kirstie Allsop featured her

FrostyMoanyWind · 03/12/2018 09:41

Bin, or give them to DH to use to clean his bike chain.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 03/12/2018 09:43

Take them to Oxfam in a bag marked "rags". They'll recycle them..

formerbabe · 03/12/2018 09:46

Of course you should bin them. FFS, even charities don't want your used knickers...as for the poster who suggested a homeless shelter..shame on you.

AutumnCrow · 03/12/2018 09:48

Charities get good money per tonne from selling on textiles for ragging/recycling. Just wash them first.

EdtheBear · 03/12/2018 10:05

Curbside - you might hand them in to be recycled but somewhere along the line somebody has to empty and sort.

Having seen a pair of gents boxers turn up in a bag of sorted rags, cut at the crotch and down one side to make a flatish rag, I'm still a bit Hmm at the though of somebody handling my old knickers washed or otherwise.

For the councils that don't want textiles in the general waste, what do they want people to do with oily or dirty rags?
There is a limit to the number of times things can be recycled.

LarkDescending · 03/12/2018 10:23

I cut up old (clean) pants and dusters etc and use them at home to stuff cushions and plump up my old Moroccan pouffe!

It is a very long time since I sent any textile to landfill.

CurbsideProphet · 03/12/2018 11:08

I don't seem to get through underwear that quickly Grin I move it from best to normal to gym to period. I helped in a charity shop weekly for a year. I wore gloves and found stale smoke infused clothes worse than clean underwear.

Landfill will be full of underwear and other textiles if it can't be recycled.

A580Hojas · 03/12/2018 11:55

of course wash the pants
put them in a recycling bag separate from clothes which can be re-used
label the bag "Recycling only"
take it to a charity shop (who get given money for rags from recycling companies)
or put in a textiles bin in your supermarket car park or local domestic tip.

Or re-use as cleaning rags at home.

There is no need whatsoever for them to go in the bin.

A580Hojas · 03/12/2018 11:59

I use old socks as dusters. With one on each hand I can dust twice as fast! Shake or bang the dust off after each use and wash in with the normal socks washing.

Or roll old white/light socks up into balls, put a couple of drops of an essential oil on them (lavender is nice) and use as drying balls in the tumble dryer.

EdtheBear · 03/12/2018 13:02

So once they have been used as rags for dusting and cleaning, then where do they go?

greendale17 · 03/12/2018 13:07

Any clothing bank at supermarkets etc will take them. Clothes they can’t sell on get recycled

bellinisurge · 03/12/2018 13:15

Use them as rags. They last for ages. Long shot but - If they are cotton you could stick them in the compost heap that has magically appeared in a corner of your garden. Or, if you don't have a compost heap, a good friend might.
