I have to cut out dairy. Oh shit...

KnickedIt · 02/12/2018 20:58

DS is 6 weeks old and it's likely based on his horrid symptoms he has an issue with cows milk or dairy.

I need to cut out dairy, cold turkey, and this weekend has been a struggle. No advent calendar, no pizza with DH and DSD, no nice butter, no Christmas biscuits etc. It's so hard! I've gone cold turkey and will continue but I'm hating it.

Any advice? Do babies grow out of it? Or am I doomed for no chocolate for the next two years?!

Make your own thread John, it will get more andwers(I don’t have any advice) but I hope it all goes smoothly for you(as much as can do anyway) x

ForAMinuteThere · 04/12/2018 10:42

I don't do dairy and to be honest, it is quite easy. Certainly easier than it used to be.

Sainsbury's have a good variety of dairy free food where I am. Aldi etc not so good. Plenty of online places you can buy in bulk from.

Try to see it as an exciting thing, you can discover lots of new foods!

MaverickSnoopy · 04/12/2018 10:58

In similar shoes. DD displayed signs at 4do and I've been dairy free for four weeks now. Having lost so much weight in the first few days dd is also on prescription formula and is mixed fed. My plan has always been one day at a time. I decided that if it was too hard then I would stop. Once I gave myself that permission it's been easier. Really. I hate it. Somehow, the desire to keep breastfeeding is more.

So ditto oats milk which is by far the best. PG tips do a tea bag which goes with dairy free milk and so tea tastes more like tea. Goodfellas do a vegan pizza which is ok. Better than no pizza. Dark chocolate. Party rings don't have dairy but they have soya. Aldi make a hobnob like biscuit called oaties which is dairy free. There is actually a lot out there that is dairy free within the regular supermarket shelves. The free from section has lots of options and I find tesco most easily identifiable. I like their apple pies and I think I saw mince pies too. So that's mince pie and dark chocolate covered - on that note melt your dark chocolate and pour it into the mould of an advent calendar.

If it makes you very unhappy then stop and move to formula but you need to work out if the prospect of that would make you more unhappy.

It's actually not that difficult to do..
Soya milk doesn't taste that different in tea, some bourbons don't contain milk, some dark chocolate doesn't, party rings, oreos..
we use vitalite spread in this house, that's dairy free..

The only thing I really miss is a good yoghurt..

Ul just be forever checking labels..
I was caught out by pesto! Who knew..

explodingkitten · 04/12/2018 11:14

Our local veggie shop sells ice cream made from rice milk and rice milk chocolate bars. They're actually quite nice, I buy them just be ause I enjoy the taste.

BlackeyedGruesome · 04/12/2018 12:09

OOOoooo Vitalite...

is dairy free.

soya milk makes ok white/cheese sauce, you would need salt and pepper to flavour though as it is a bit blander than milk.

sainsburys milk free cheddar is more mature than violife blocks, whihc is more plastic cheese.

aldi bourbons are 22p and milk free. (and egg free) (oaties and party biscuits too)

they do some mixed cracker biscuits that are dairy free too, just picked up a box for christmas.

sainsburys do a range of milk free cheesees. not tried them yet as dd eats plastic violife.

BlackeyedGruesome · 04/12/2018 12:09

morrisons do a nice cornetto like icecream that is dairy free, 4 for £2

Wingingthis · 04/12/2018 12:14

Hi my 13 mo hasn’t CMPA, be warey that some things you don’t think have dairy in, do. Eg. Some dark chocolate, crisps(!!)
Join a group on Facebook called CMPA Breastfeeding support - loads of people post treats on there you can have. Like the doughnuts from the co op which happen to be dairy free 😍 I also pretty much live off bourbons

Ohyesiam · 04/12/2018 12:14

If it’s CMPA as opposed to lactose intolerance you can have goat dairy. I can’t stand the taste of the milk, but the cheddar is nice( and nothing like the stinky Brie type goats cheese that everyone knows) , and goats butter is delicious.
You can get great vegan chocolate made with almond milk in health food shops if you don’t like dark.
There is a vegan mozzarella for pizzas, which kind of works if you smother it in salami, but it’s not quite the same.

Wingingthis · 04/12/2018 12:15

ALSO 50% of babies with dairy allergy are also allergic to soya, just so you’re aware. Oatly milk is the best and they also have a creme freche

misscockerspaniel · 04/12/2018 12:52

KoKo dairy free cheese from Waitrose is lovely and the nicest oat milk IMO is Alpro natural oat milk.

VitaminSea · 04/12/2018 12:54

I use the alpro growing up milk (soy) closest to milk.
Oreos of course
Vitalite is the best spread
There's a couple of brands of cheese that aren't horrific. There's a pepper jack cheese slice pack, can't remember brand, but it's pretty okay in a burger.
Moo free chocolate (they do an advent calendar, might get it cheap now!)
Vego and vego spread! Better than Nutella
Most supermarkets have some dairy free cake options, I know Morrison's have some donuts.
Premade garlic bread! Pretty sure it was Tesco's? They actually mark it as vegan so had to be dairy free.
Also vegan frozen section has a fair amount of deserts!

gingerandsmall · 04/12/2018 12:54

Moofree chocolate is brilliant. I'm lactose intolerant and I love it. They also do advent calendars :)

BeekyChitch · 04/12/2018 15:27

OP maybe I'm being stupid but why do you have to cut out dairy if your 6 week old is allergic? Are you breastfeeding?

Bigonesmallone3 · 04/12/2018 15:41

@BeekyChitch
It's quite often recommended to BF mums whose babies are sicky/gassy/unsettled/colicky/poop issues..

KittenCamile · 04/12/2018 15:57

Probably repeating some of the above but...

Cut soya as well as the protein is similar and could upset baby.

Dairy free is pretty easy, soy free is a little harder.

Most chocolate has soy in, best alternative is moo free chocolate, it’s in the free from section in most supermarkets.

Nut and oat milk is served in almost all coffee shops now.

Most cafes have one dairy free cake but be careful if it’s chocolate it will have soya in it.

Most bread has soy flour in it. Champions is my fave one that doesn’t.

vitalife spread or violife vegan block are good “butters”.

‘Follow your heart’ vegan cheese is free from everything and yummy, melts great too so you can top your own pizza.

I have so many as this has been my life for 5 months now!

Allergy free yummy advent calendar. Maybe sold out everywhere though as ace

BeekyChitch · 05/12/2018 00:11

@Bigonesmallone3 Interesting - I didn't know this! Thanks for that!

beela · 05/12/2018 07:40

The problem with a lot of the dairy free stuff is that it's made with palm oil instead so then there's an ethical dilemma. Lots of label reading required.

noblegiraffe · 05/12/2018 08:43

It's quite often recommended to BF mums whose babies are sicky/gassy/unsettled/colicky/poop issues..

And it really shouldn’t be because most of the time it’s not going to be the issue as babies are just sickly/gassy/unsettled because they’re babies and it may end up putting a mother off breastfeeding or make their life far more difficult for no good reason.

honeysucklejasmine · 05/12/2018 09:22

Knitting the Oatly custard is lovely but if you heat it, it goes very thin. The flavour is great, but the texture only the same if it's cold!

We're free from dairy, egg and soya, and DS is also gluten intolerant. It took a bit of getting used to but it's easy now. I'd agree that substitutes isn't really the road to take.

Get yourself a vegan cook book. I sub in meat for tofu/tempeh/Quorn products, but otherwise follow the recipes. They are lovely and usually very healthy. BOSH! is a popular vegan cook book at the moment.

Nedzilla · 05/12/2018 09:23

The Oatly chocolate milk makes great hot chocolate when heated

Oblomov18 · 05/12/2018 10:03

So glad I found this thread. Will point my friend who is struggling, in this direction. MN at its best!

Bigonesmallone3 · 05/12/2018 10:26

@noblegiraffe
But it is that's why everyone is assisting OP

DaisyDreaming · 05/12/2018 10:32

Sorry if it’s already been said but a lot of babies with cows milk allergy have a soya one too so when the mum switches everything to soya things don’t improve that much. It’s shocking how little a lot of doctors know about allergies
