Having being made aware (via social media) that tinsel and coloured lights are twee, naff and dates- an opportunity for all things bright! Soft white lights welcome, because this is an all encompassing post. Show me the tres!!! Mine is included.

I feel all nostalgic when I look at my outside lights. I really wanted the ones that were trendy when I was small - kind of a coloured cup inside a black lantern. Couldn't find them anywhere though. I think the colour is long overdue a comeback!

cantfocus1 · 02/12/2018 22:55

SD1978 I will, hoping to get it up next week

2ducks2ducklings · 02/12/2018 23:34

Ours isn't up yet, but it will be as fantastically tacky as it was last year. Nothing matches, it's tinsel galore and come January there will be about a cubic tonne of glitter to hoover up from all of the kids homemade decorations we have accumulated over the years.
I love it! We're putting up multi coloured lights outside this year too.
I do think the warm white lights definitely look classier than the multi coloured offerings but, to me, Christmas is more tacky than classy.

Oldraver · 03/12/2018 08:51

I've just bought a new set of coloured lights and they are very bright. I love coloured ones

Went to the next town over yesterday and noticed how dull everywhere looked with the white lights

Oldraver · 03/12/2018 08:59

Ours will be going up next week ( thinking of taking a day off work) The last couple of years DS has put up the tree and he always puts tinsel on.

I usually buy a couple of baubles each year and we have a few that are 34 years old. We've ended up with about half a dozen new ones as I'm working in a garden place with a fantastic selection

My Mum also bought me a new Lalique bauble (shock)

DS has his own tree and has a few new decorations each year

strawberrypenguin · 03/12/2018 09:02

@Oldraver where did you get your new lights from? I've got a coloured set on the tree but they're really dull. I've been saying for about 3 years I need a brighter set but I forget until I get them out again every year!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/12/2018 17:56

@PeterPrunus where did you get your traditional lights from? I was explaining to my dc that in the 80’s when I grew up, we had these amazing turquoise, orange, pink and red lights, none of these primary colours and bright blue like today. Yours are amazing. I did have an actual set from the 1980’s but they were a fire hazard and Dh and I binned them a few years back.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/12/2018 18:05

These are mine, they don’t photograph well do they, Christmas trees??

Here's our non-LED tree, we can't reach the top so there's no star on it yet!

PeterPrunus · 03/12/2018 23:27

@thenewaveragebear1983 I’ve bought them from lots of different places over the years as I’ve tried to build up a few sets without going bankrupt.

It’s these ones by Noma, they’re called Pickwick lights and are near identical to the lights my Nan and Grandad had on their tree minus the frosted tacky glittered edges Grin. That’s why I will be heartbroken when I can’t find anymore sets. Modern lights just don’t have the same depth and warmth of colour to my nostalgic for 70’s Christmases eyes Sad

IncyWincyGrownUp · 03/12/2018 23:46

Ours isn’t up yet, but it will loom like a magpie sprayed it with pva then rolled it in broken stained glass. All the tack. (White lights though, headache reasons.)

SD1978 · 04/12/2018 06:19

@PeterPrunus- they are a blast from the past!! I remember those kind of lights. Would be great if they brought back non led old style lights- maybe it's the power consumption, fire risk aspect? If they have one?

And yay to everyone's trees- it's lovely looking at what other people do!

We don't have any decorations up yet, so can't post a photo - but I saw this on the BBC news website yesterday www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-46418954 (Westonbirt Arboretum is transformed into an illuminated winter wonderland). If I lived near there I'd definitely visit it.

PeterPrunus · 04/12/2018 07:31

@SD1978 you’re probably right about the power consumption.
I’ve decided once the tree is up to switch my smart meter off until after the festive season Grin and they do get hot so yes probably an element of that as well. I’m super careful not to let anything touch the actual bulbs just in case.
It’s been lovely seeing lots of colourful trees for a change. Like babysharkah
mine is the most colourful tacky
one on the street.

Oblomov18 · 04/12/2018 13:53

Things are not going well for me.
My reindeer are damaged, from the summer heat? in the loft. Sad

I can try gluing, but they'll never be the same.

I've been preening tree, but it just doesn't look right.

Not happy.

Gone traditional here

Kernowgal · 04/12/2018 17:14

babysharkah I love those lantern lights too - they remind me of going to the pub at Christmas in the 80s Grin

Your trees are all wonderful!

I don't have room for a tree but I will be doing the traditional Cornish Holly branch and bunging as many decorations on it as possible.
