Delia Smith Christmas.

I'm watching her old Christmas series from the 90s. So far she has cooked some very random stuff, handled a raw goose then touched the salt and pepper grinders and given an explanation about what pesto is.

I was 10 in 1990...was good really this grim, I don't remember.

Prunes in almanac anyone? Gravlax tartlets with a rolled out bread base?

I believe that Nigella's recipes aren't thoroughly tested and checked the way Delia and Mary Berry's are.

Her Tiramisu from the Winter book is my go-to dessert , we always have it in place of Christmas pud.

Said to dh earlier that we should do her tiramisu this year for christmas dessert. I actually have very fond memories of her recipes - did that tiramisu for a big lovely wine-filled murder party with my friends back in the early 90s before we had children or responsibilities. Her spiced chicken was something the guys used to cook for us when a big group of us would go away for weekends. Loads of associations.

I LOVE Delia!

I still make loads of her recipes on a regular basis. Making beef in designer beer for dinner on Thursday.

I have a very well used copy of her complete cook book. Pretty sure my mum has all her books.

Her recipes are idiot proof and delicious.

I've also got 6 episodes of nigella xmas cooking banked up on the sky planner. DH makes the gingerbread stuffing (now known as cake-on in our house) every year and it's bloody amazing.

I've got Delia's cookery course on now, I remember watching it and seeing her like a lovely, motherly figure, now she's at least 15 years younger than me!

We had nigella on last night, she’s just so over the top and the camera movements are so flipping jerky!!

Is delia retired? Maybe we could start a campaign to get her back #theworldneedsdelia #cakecanfixbrexit

GoldenSyrupLion · 13/12/2018 09:00

Yes she's retired.

I love Delia. I remember watching the programme as a child and the fuss about ingredients selling out when she mentioned them. So many things that were novel then are staples now because of her. I still use loads of her recipes, especially at Christmas - the pud, stuffing and cranberry and onion confit and cranberry and orange relish are essentials for us! She’d still be my go-to recipe book if I had people coming over and no idea what to cook because her recipes are reliable and always tasty 😋

You could look at any cook's programme from decades ago, and a lot of the recipes would seem very dated.
I still have a very early 70s book with a picture of a very young Mary Berry at the front! I still use it for a few things, but some of recipes seem terribly old fashioned, not to mention very bland, now.

I used to have an even older book - a NZ author IIRC - which told you to boil cauliflower for 20 minutes!! And it was always 'a minute speck of garlic' with 'if you really must' either said or implied. 😄 That one went in the bin long ago.

I like Delia's recipes - they always work. I recently made her Christmas mincemeat, which was v easy and is super-nice..

@GoldenSyrupLion That makes me feel sad but what a career!
