*TMI* My son is passing blood

My son has had an upset stomach for 2 weeks. I tried to get an appointment for the doctor I was passed to a nurse and was told to give him immodium and he should take one after every bouts

If it wasn’t getting better after a few weeks to call back. This morning my daughter went to the loo and there was a period style blood clot sitting in the bottom of the toilet.

I’m now waiting for GP to call me back. Does anyone have any experience of this? I’m googling and getting the shit scared out of me.

Is it bright red? Could be a little tear that looks worse at the bottom of the loo bowl? Or it could be from wiping too hard?

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 02/12/2018 09:01

Yes bright red but a jelly like clot.

Take him down to A&E. My son had this - it's called melena and I don't want to scare you but they need to check for internal bleeding.

LaLaLamp · 02/12/2018 09:06

ok, has he had a lot of pain? Not trying to diagnose btw - my son was diagnosed with chron's around 18. Hope you talk to doctor soon and don't let them fob you off.

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 02/12/2018 09:12

Some stomach pain. Quite a lot of wind and diarrhoea

My experience of this was Crohn's disease as well , it took awhile to be diagnosed as lala said don't be fobbed off it's gone in for too long to be an 'upset stomach' Hope younger some answers from the doc

FoonaLagoonaBaboona · 02/12/2018 09:18

*hope you get !

frogsbreath · 02/12/2018 09:22

I'm glad you've called the gp and I hope they get back to you soon. They may want a stool sample and to feel his tummy for constipation or check his rear end for tears (just so you can prepare him mentally).

If the problem persists through sensible diet they may want to check his anal passage with a camera. He can be conscious sedated for this and be in hospital only a few hours.

My husband experiences these bouts of melena (bloody diarrhoea) due to Diverticulitis flare ups. It is controlled somewhat by medication.

GaryBaldbiscuit · 02/12/2018 09:24

bright red is normally the higher up, nearer to the anus. but the blob, could just be a side effect of gastroenteritis

fessmess · 02/12/2018 09:26

I have ulcerative colitis, mainly in rectum, and this is one sign of a flare-up. But, only a doc can diagnose. Hope he gets well soon x

Fleabag123 · 02/12/2018 09:27

For PP - melena is passing stools that look black and like tar - this is bleeding from higher up in the stomach or bowel that is part digested before being expelled. This is not what the OP is describing
Bright red bleeding is from the rectum or anus and is likely from a fissure or similar. Scary but unlikely to be anything sinister

BalloonSlayer · 02/12/2018 09:33

My DC has had this - quite seriously - off and on for a couple of years. It needs investigating , so a trip to GP sooner rather than later (ie this week, not next) but no one has ever suggested we need to belt to a&e.

GP will likely ask to have a quick look to check for piles, feel tummy then send you off with a sample pot for testing for calprotectin (a protein? which shows a raised level if you have inflammatory bowel disease - crohns or colitis).

Fleabag123 · 02/12/2018 09:36

Sorry, just seen you said it’s been going on for 2 weeks.
Agree he should see a dr if not settling as inflammatory bowel disease is another possibility.
Hope you are both ok

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 02/12/2018 21:19

He is being referred for a colonoscopy. Looking at possible colitis.
