Oh Jesus... Just stopped a burglary

Please excuse any typos... I'm really shaking.

Heard a strange car drive down the back lane (houses are surrounded by fields and have a road back and front but only the front is lit). Stuck my head out of the window that faces onto the back and listen (we often get sat Nov failures) and heard them talking about where to break in and how easily the flat screen lift off the wall. Dialled 999 and kept watching. They headed to their car (assuming for tools) while I was still waiting to get through to 999.

So I found a police siren video on my tablet and played it at full blast. Well they ran so fast one fell over. Sadly didn't get a good look at the car, just a fleeting impression so not much help.

I'm feeling a bit shaky and at the same time proud of myself. Police took what details I had and we've just had a car driving round. I don't think I'll sleep tonight

even if you cant get camera that sees them they don't know this.buy one of those signs to put all over and a fake camera.

ohtheholidays · 02/12/2018 03:15

You are bloody awesome well done!

I hope they manage to find the arseholes and I hope the one that fell over really hurt himself!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/12/2018 03:32

Mouse, you are a Superstar ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Try to get some rest, for you 🌺🌸🌻

bastardkitty · 02/12/2018 03:49

Well done you! No idea how you did that - you must have been bricking it. You don't actually need lights fir security cameras to work because they have infrared. I would get cameras fitted on Monday!

olderthanyouthink · 02/12/2018 03:54

Quick thinking, well done!

elfies · 02/12/2018 03:58

Wow..just Wow,
well done on the quick thinking .

loopylass13 · 02/12/2018 04:01

I would alter your neighbours to what happened so they can all take extra precautions with security etc.

Lisaturtle · 02/12/2018 05:16

They're such idiots for having a full conversation about how to do it, very Harry and Marv.

You on the other hand are a genius! I know it must have been horrible so look after yourself and talk to the neighbours.

SleighBellsRing · 02/12/2018 06:11

I'm so impressed with your quick thinking! Bet the police were too.

RangerLady · 02/12/2018 06:17

Wow quick thinking! That's genius
I used to work at a stately home with grounds. I was once running a nighttime walk with about 15 people in said grounds when as we were quietly passing a gate someone threw over a crowbar and other tools obv to break in with! I picked them up and carried them to our lock up. Always liked the idea of the idiots coming back to find their tools of the trade were gone...

Workreturner · 02/12/2018 06:21

You basically assisted their escape from the police. You should be mortified

Workreturner · 02/12/2018 06:24

Seriously.

Rather than play a pretend siren, you should have been taking detailed notes of car details and descriptions.

The police would have arrived (without sirens!) and if they hadn’t have caught them in the act (much easier to convict) they would have had extensive details from you.

PristineCondition · 02/12/2018 06:26

It’s to early to be such an arsehole. Workreturner, go and eat your advent and cheer up

DaffydownClock · 02/12/2018 06:29

'You should be mortified?'
So what if the thieves got away before the police got there, having caused damage and taken goodness knows what?
Stupid response 😳

Zulor · 02/12/2018 06:30

Good thinking. I'd never have thought of something like that. Did you play it out the window or something?

INeedNewShoes · 02/12/2018 06:30

Wow Workreturner that's nasty.

So OP should have left them to break into her neighbours' house? Do you know how traumatic some people find being broken into? Some never recover.

Aside from that, OP was in a panic situation. It's impossible to think through all the possible consequences when you're under pressure like that.

Even if what you're saying is correct there are much less bitchy ways of saying it.

Zulor · 02/12/2018 06:31

To be honest, if I could scare a potential burglar off, rather than have them break into my home and then wait for a police response, I'd take the former any day. Who knows what would have happened if they had gotten in.

Zulor · 02/12/2018 06:34

Btw peoples - now is literally Christmas for burglars. They know that families will have lots of presents stashed for Santa etc., so be particularly vigilant this time of year. They love things like phones, playstations, TVs, laptops etc. If you can at all, store things somewhere difficult to get to, such as an attic.

Workreturner · 02/12/2018 06:35

So if they had have broken in and got the flat screen. Meanwhile OP has taken the car details and got a detailed description of culprits.

  1. Insurance in all likelihood. Would have been very straightforward in this case.
  1. The police would have actually caught the culprits and prevented this happening again.

Now, these guys are still out. Police have no idea who they were. So they will just do again.

TheBaltictriangle · 02/12/2018 06:36

Can you install a cheap sensor light on your fence facing out into the back lane. That way anyone passing will trigger the light and well done for the quick thinking.

Zulor · 02/12/2018 06:37

I've seen safety videos where lights just light the way for burglars, rather than act as a deterrent. I'll try to find the video.

Zulor · 02/12/2018 06:39
Zulor · 02/12/2018 06:45

It's not the video I was thinking of, but there was one which said, having lights that automatically go on, just light the way for the burglar. No-one pays attention to them as 'oh it's probably a cat' etc.

UrsulaPandress · 02/12/2018 06:49

In our area the chance of the police turning up is practically zero so well done you.

Changenameday · 02/12/2018 06:50

The police have very few resources to find “low level” burglars like this. I was wiped out a few years ago and all they did was give us the crime ref number for our insurance company, no prints taken or anything, much better to prevent workreturner!
