8yo dd needs to vomit but can't

She has been sat cuddling the toilet bowl for the last 90 minutes. She is absolutely exhausted but every time she stands up to go to bed she immediately says she's going to be sick and resumes her position. I'm reluctant to tell her to put her fingers down her throat but I know it's what she needs.
What should I do?

Awww poor little thing.

Can you send her to bed with a bucket? At least then she’ll be comfortable.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/12/2018 21:57

Get her to lie down on the bathroom floor. I've never managed to make myself sick but I've been where she is - she'll throw up when she needs to. Otherwise, get comfy near the toilet and i hope it passes soon, poor girl.

Iloveautumnleaves · 01/12/2018 22:00

Ohh poor wee thing.

I’d put a large towel on the bed, another on the floor and a give her a big ‘dirty jobs’ bowl and a cool flannel. Sit with her or put some music or tv on if it’ll help her sleep.

Is she just feeling anxious about being sick? That'll explain why she doesn't feel she can get up. Is she scared to be sick?

moredoll · 01/12/2018 22:09

She could try standing upright and then touching her toes.

Orlande · 01/12/2018 22:11

I'd give her a big glass of water to gulp down. If she's going to be sick then that should do it.

dementedpixie · 01/12/2018 22:11

Towel over the pillow. Sick bowl lined with kitchen roll. Get her to bed

FannyFifer · 01/12/2018 22:15

Oh god, sympathies. My dd same age does this when she's unwell.
It's so frustrating, just puke for goodness sake.

Holstenlane · 01/12/2018 22:21

@dementedpixie

Sorry, but why would you like the bowl with kitchen towel? They throw up in the bowl, you chuck it down the toilet then wash the rest out. Kitchen towel just makes the whole thing harder with having to pick it out surely?

dementedpixie · 01/12/2018 22:24

Splashback. Kitchen roll stops it splashing out when it hits the plastic

dementedpixie · 01/12/2018 22:25

Although we have a magic sick bowl as I think it's only been puked in once! Think it's just psychological to have it handy

NakedNoodle · 01/12/2018 22:26

I find pressing on my stomach helps when I need to vomit but cant

Fishcakey · 01/12/2018 22:27

I will NOT vomit. Let her lie there, she can overcome it if she is that determined.

KittensAndChristmasCake · 01/12/2018 22:28

Agree with the big glass of water, gulping it down should do the trick.
How is she now, OP?

perfectpanda · 01/12/2018 22:30

I feel her pain. I had this earlier in the week. I knew i was going to be sick 3 hours before i was. Thankfully it was evening and i lay in bed and had bowl on floor and when i was ready i used that... only one vomit, a fevery night and then a sleepy next day. Ds had the same. Hope it passes soon.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 01/12/2018 22:33

I don't think she needs to be sick by putting her fingers down her throat at all. That's a dangerous thing to teach a child to do.

Inducing vomiting can damage to the tissues in your throat and mouth, cause dehydration and further harm by stomach acids or aspiration, (inhaling vomit into your lungs) so I wouldn't do it.

Warm salt water (2 tsp in glass of water, drink fast) or exposure to strong smells may work if you really want to induce vomiting.

This is what I do - Put a cold flannel on her forehead and back of her neck. Get her to take deep breathes, slowly through her mouth. Perhaps get her outside for fresh air for a bit.

mineofuselessinformation · 01/12/2018 22:39

Do you have any lemonade in the house?
If so, pour it between two glasses until it's gone flat and let her sip it.
It might help settle her stomach.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 01/12/2018 22:39

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or mustard works the same as salt - I'm not sure of amounts - I think about 1 teaspoon in a glass.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 01/12/2018 22:39

Does she have vertigo from an ear infection? The feeling sick when she moves sounds familiar. Is the sickness worse if she shuts her eyes and shakes her head? Any other symptoms? Fever? I would probably move her a short way away, set up a bed for her and give her a bowl. I wouldn't get her to be sick as sometimes it can be hard to stop and still doesn't make you feel better. How old is she?
