Ideas for DH’s 40th... on Boxing Day

It’s surely the worst day of the year for a birthday anyway, but this year DH is 40 and I am stuck for ideas of what to do. I need help!

Anything involving friends is out, as everyone is away seeing family

We don’t have a car

We don’t have much money this year, so no surprise flights etc. but can stretch to a nice lunch out or an activity.

We live in London so can get anywhere public transport can take us

Have two kids aged 6 and 10 that will need to come along... getting a babysitter is unlikely.

Any ideas?

Shows/musicals are out as we both hate them Grin

I’m not sure of this will help but for my hubbys birthday I got him 40 presents. It was an idea I’d got off Pinterest! The majority of it was very small inexpensive things (socks, his fave sweets etc) but with one or two more expensive things. Also put in a few ‘cheques’ he could cash in - romantic dinner cooked, night off from doing bedtime for the kids. Also made things - saw an idea off Not on the High street and made my own: reasons to thank him for.... for being the best dad, for cooking the best roast, for being the best storyteller, being the best dad to the kids etc etc. Hope that helps xx

Head to Somerset house and go ice skating then a lovely walk over to the South Bank or Covent Garden and lunch. Tell the restaurant it's his birthday so they make a fuss...you might even get a free drink or pudd

Get a 40 balloon as well and take it upstairs in the morning with a cuppa and his cards

Ice skating, meal, cozy film at Everyman.

I had a party last Boxing Day and my friends were relieved for an excuse to not be with their families!

Does your DH like celebrating his birthday on Boxing Day? If he doesn't then could you have a nice meal at home with a cake and balloons. Set a specific date when you will have a family/friends get together or do something he would love but never happens because it's Boxing Day.

If he wants to celebrate that day here are ideas in Time Out

LOVE the 40 presents idea, thank you Wink

Ice skating might not be the greatest fun with the kids in tow, dragging a crying 6yo around is not going to be a treat Grin

As lovely as the south bank can be, we go there quite often so it wouldn’t really be very special. But perhaps a mooch around town could be ok? I don’t know, it could be a bit depressing if it’s raining...

Someone in my family also has a Boxing Day birthday and it's a battle to overcome the post-Christmas anticlimax so I feel for you! For one of their big birthdays we did a treasure hunt, mainly on foot. We carried all the clues with us, and when they solved one and were in the right spot, we handed over the next clue. We all went round together, and the clues were things like needing to remember silly family stories etc to solve them. If you're London and could also factor in fairly good tubes and buses then I would think you could have fun with this! Set the number of clues appropriately so the kids don't get too tired, and make the middle clue somewhere you could stop for lunch. Take a photo of you all at every stop Smile

Thanks, that’s not a bad idea Smile

Ice skating sounds a lovely idea. Before or after the Treasure Hunt.

Thought about booking the sky garden, but not sure if it’s open/fully booked? Website doesn’t seem to work on a phone. Has anyone been? Is it any good?

Ok, reckon I can afford a night away in a hotel on boxing night... if I can find one! Anyone know somewhere nice and accessible by Boxing Day trains?
