Why would anyone buy a stove top kettle?

Staying at a lovely holiday home. No kettle, just a stove top kettle.

At this time of day I’m usually becoming coffee / tea / coffee / tea and repeat.
But takes so bloomin’ long to boil!

Just wondering if there are any advantages to a stove top over a plug in kettle? Genuinely curious!

Me too, Shriek, and well spotted - all welcome over in my Christmas name change thread in Chat Xmas Smile

3luckystars · 02/12/2018 17:22

They do look nice! I can see clearly now.

Santasushi · 02/12/2018 17:24

I love mine purely for the whistle

3luckystars · 02/12/2018 17:27

This is why i should stay out of here.

Ten minutes ago I thought they were pointless, and now I would absolutely love one of these.

Shriek · 02/12/2018 18:41

Me too stars I need a whistle for mine, but now I want to buy a new one! Sad to say, I'm not sure I can find another the same now, so might end up just not

Shriek · 02/12/2018 18:42

Unless anyone here throwing theirs out and has a spare whistle now?!

Bimwit · 02/12/2018 18:44

They dont break

BlackBeltInPresentWrapping · 02/12/2018 19:03

Those of you without could just whistle at the opportune moment - pretend you've got one.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 02/12/2018 19:23

I might get one, now we're on a smart meter. The difference in cost per kilowatt hour between gas and electric is quite surprising.

Laniakea · 02/12/2018 19:25

I have one!

  • doesn’t break
  • doesn’t take worktop space
  • less cluttered
  • looks nicer
  • whistles!
Laniakea · 02/12/2018 19:26

Oh & works if there’s a power cut (also works on the stove & camping job)

Laniakea · 02/12/2018 19:26

Ffs hob

Workreturner · 02/12/2018 19:35

Home now and back to my beautiful bravabtia stainless steel electric kettle that boils water in about a minute.

So happy!

I really don't think that they're more environmentally friendly or save money. Maybe if you have an induction stove they're no worse, but I bought one for our gas stove a few years ago. We have bottled gas and went from using a 15kg bottle once every 8-9 months to every 3 months! That's a phenomenal increase but not surprising when you think how long it takes to boil X by however many cups of tea you have a day.

tofupanda · 02/12/2018 21:29

reallybadidea I wondered the same about gas v electricity consumption, and also metal v plastic. I used an old camping kettle on our gas hob when our electric kettle broke and really liked the idea of it, but it took an age to boil.

Aurea · 02/12/2018 21:31

The hot water tastes nicer. Boiling water in plastic is not healthy.

Shriek · 02/12/2018 21:37

Well its obvious you will use a lot more gas! That's not a revelation, but household gas use/charge is considerably less than cost for electric kettle use/charge.

I would have thought a kettle that lasts a lifetime on the stove is considerably more exo frie dly than the years of replacing plastic kettlesthe plastics used, the wiring, and the elements, than an empty tin?

woodhill · 02/12/2018 21:46

I'd buy one next time. I like them. I have gas

woodhill · 02/12/2018 21:53

Only drawback is the heaviness for me

RandomMess · 02/12/2018 22:01

My kettle is lightweight no way would I have a le cruset type one - take longer to boil 🤣

Shriek · 02/12/2018 22:03

Negligible, and not heavy, again negligible.

What I have found though that does make it take a lot longer to boil is when I watch it.

irregularegular · 02/12/2018 22:05

Doesn't take up space on work surface. No annoying cords and plugs. Looks nice. I'm not in that much of a rush

We have an Aga (though turn it off in summer) but prefer stove top anyway. It is a bit slow when Aga off and using gas hob though.

witchmountain · 04/12/2018 17:45

The le creuset kettles aren’t like the cast iron pans, RandomMess, you could lift it with a finger!

RandomMess · 04/12/2018 20:05

@witchmountain not my friends one Confused certainly not compared to mine!!
