18m old one illness after another since starting nursery - is this normal?

DD is on her 5th lurgy in 6 weeks.

20th October: bad cold
2nd November: severe vomiting bug
11th November: chest infection
22nd November: severe viral rash and fever (GP couldn't identify rash but put DD on antivirals)
Today; what looks like conjunctivitis plus a very chesty cough

Is this within the realms of normal for a toddler who started nursery mid October?

Before all this the worst she'd ever had was a couple of mild colds and a mild case of croup.

And is there anything I can do to help her recover enough to not catch the next thing so easily? It feels like she's just not getting more than 2 days in a row where she's well.

I suppose I'm just having a moan really but if anyone has any words of advice I'll be pleased to hear them!

The cough stuff is normal and my DS isn't even in daycare. He has a chesty thing every 2 weeks and it's exhausting; he's 4. I remember similar with my other two as well. The stomach bug sounds like bad luck. Is he taking a multivitamin? We are giving our kids Vitamin D and magnesium in an attempt to keep bugs at bay.

Sounds normal to me.

Yeah unfortunately my toddler is poorly with something every month.

nogooddeedgoesunpunished · 01/12/2018 06:57

Sadly this sounds normal. I got constant calls from the Nursery either to give permission for calpol to be administered or to collect DS. This went on for the first 6 months then it settled down.
My GP told me it was because DS was building up his immune system and little ones can get up to 10 colds a year. There wasn't a child in his room at Nursery who didn't have a rolling cold.
Having said that, you know your child best and I was always advised to trust my instincts and get him checked out if I was worried. Turned out his recurring stomach bug was an intolerance to dairy.

FrangipaniBlue · 01/12/2018 07:45

Yep.

And for the next 2yrs ish it will continue with sharing with you too Confused

INeedNewShoes · 01/12/2018 07:50

Well thank you, sort of, for confirming that this is to be expected.

I've been relatively fortunate to only have had 3 of the 5 lurgies. I'd rather be spared the conjunctivitis!

Completely normal, from experience it happens to the new staff as well. Plus side is your child will develop a kick ass immune system.

Odiepants · 01/12/2018 08:09

Yes. My DS started nursery in September and from November to March either he, me or DH were constantly ill with colds, tummy bugs or other viral type things.

It didn't happen the next winter and he is rarely sick now at school.

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 01/12/2018 08:39

Yes normal I'm afraid but it does get better as time goes on.

CAAKE · 01/12/2018 19:09

Very normal. Their bodies need to build up immunity over time.

IchHabeDurst · 01/12/2018 19:38

Very normal, sadly. My DS has been at nursery since January and I am not exaggerating when I say he has had a permanent cough and runny nose ever since. Everyone warned me it would happen but I never thought it would be this bad!

To date he's had 3 chest infections, ringworm, chicken pox, several stomach bugs, hand foot & mouth, fevers from viruses, a viral rash and 2 bouts of conjunctivitis, plus endless colds and coughs.

Hubby1980 · 03/12/2018 14:47

Know exactly what you are going through, it felt like one endless bout after another. But our DD is now 18 months into nursery and whilst she still has a seemingly never ending cold, we get nowhere near as many phone calls to pick her up anymore.

A really nice GP we saw once when she had an ear infection said that up to school age they need to have at least 7 different colds/bugs/infections etc per year in order to build up a healthy immune system!

Doesnt help at the time, believe me I know, but I promise it does get better!

Worieddd · 03/12/2018 14:50

Very normal unfortunately

jeanne16 · 03/12/2018 14:59

When my DD started in nursery, we were called nearly every week to collect her for some ailment. It became impossible as I was trying to work as well. The good bit is she was never I’ll when she started school.

cjt110 · 03/12/2018 15:00

They will go through it all over again when they start school.

MiddlingMum · 03/12/2018 15:02

Yes, totally normal. A nightmare at the time but brilliant for their immune systems.

One of mine was constantly ill in nursery, then had a total of 2.5 days off between Reception and Year 13. (And I'm not the sort of mother to send them in ill before anyone starts).

halfwitpicker · 03/12/2018 15:04

Sounds about right.

trilbydoll · 03/12/2018 15:47

Yes, especially starting in October. Might be fractionally better starting in Spring, a few less bugs around, but still plenty to catch!

redsummershoes · 03/12/2018 15:53

totally normal for the first winter in nursery.

it will get better and soon you will look back fondly of sitting in an important meeting noticing a giant snot slime patch on your best top Grin

Ohyesiam · 03/12/2018 15:54

This happened with dd.
I managed it really effectively with dietary tweaks.
I stopped giving her any dairy, because it is very mucous forming, so aggravated colds. I also cut out sugar except for fruit, because sugar makes the immune system much less able to respond to viruses and bacteria.

serenawren · 03/12/2018 16:05

Oh we've had chest infections, hand foot and mouth and all sorts here!
I've resorted to making bone broth for LO in an attempt to boost his immunity, hope it does the trick!

autumnleaves19 · 03/12/2018 16:45

Give sambucol over the winter months - it's really good! Cheapest on amazon
