adding value to house

simply, does anyone know if adding French doors to the back room of a small terraced property will add value to it? so we basically eill be able to go out to the large back yard through there instead of through the kitchen.
Husband wants to add them but I don't see the point apart from we can then add a large fridge freezer where the kitchen door is.

It would make me keener to buy definitely.

Thanks velvet. It would bring more light into the room but then we would be bricking up the kitchen door obviously so less light in there.

It's just a small 2 bed terrace so that's why I'm wondering if there's any point spending money on it. I am wanting to move in a couple of years time.

Before you go bricking up the door make sure that your kitchen still meets safety requirements for fire exit and ventilation (I had to have the gas cooker removed from my kitchen as the back door is now enclosed by the utility room).

Got patio doors in a similar set-up, they are definitely a selling point but I never use them.

Thank you. I hadn't thought of that and I doubt my husband has either. I'll get looking into it.

Adding French doors will not add value . Adding rooms/extra sq ft will add value. However, adding French doors may make your home more easily saleable which is different. If adding French doors adds to your enjoyment of your home and makes life easier go for it. But, don't expect it to add value to to your property. Don't spend more on your property then you expect to make should you sell it, unless you you specifically want to live in a high spec house or love high end finishes etc.

Second what Fanny has said.

Personally I like to be able to go into the garden via French doors in a living/dining room. I don't like the only way out to the garden being through a kitchen.

They let a lot of light in, frame the garden. To me it is a selling point for relatively little expense.

Just keep the door to the kitchen where it is.

Doubletrouble99 · 01/12/2018 00:15

Definitely do the patio door if you can afford it. They will make such a difference to your living room. I have always loved being able to have patio doors open in the summer and bringing the outside in. I presume that there might be quite a few houses like yours in the area so having something like patio doors would definitely be a selling point.

Lots to think about. We don't have much apart cash so I'd only like to add the doors if it was to add value. It's only a small terraced that's why I'm not sure if there's any point although I do like that it'll add more light.

Can't you add French doors and keep the back door? It would save expense.

Isthisalltherewillbe · 02/12/2018 08:26

yes reading the advice on here I think we will keep the back door too. DH was thinking of putting in a fridge freezer were the door is because at the moment we only have space foe undercounter ones, then that would free up space for a dryer and a dishwasher.
However the safety aspect bothers me plus it would block the light coming into the kitchen.

I had patio doors done and blocked up the kitchen door, I was told there were no safety issues with that.

MulderitsmeX · 03/12/2018 17:56

Can you fit bifold doors? They seem to be more in vogue than old style french doors. People I know are ripping out the french ones and putting bifold in.
