You know when you ask someone what they do and they go "ooh I'm X/Y/Z" and you go oh yes lovely and then think but what do you actually do day to day?
Or is that just me? So here's a thread about what you do day to day in your job!

School Teacher in a Pupil Referral Unit. Hideously stressful and take my life into my own hands daily!!

Squirrelslostnut · 01/12/2018 11:30

Probation Officer.

  • advise Magistrates/Judges around sentencing options.
  • interview and work with offenders to find out why their offence occurred, how best to prevent it happening again, other ways to help sort their lives out
  • track progress, engagement, compliance and deliver sentence plan
  • enforce sentence at court or sending people back to prison
  • identify risks, how to manage them and take action as appropriate
  • liaise with other agencies to get offender support or to protect someone from harm
  • challenge offenders on their beliefs and behaviour and get them to critique themselves and recognise the need for change.
  • look past the obvious and analyse everything
  • lots and lots of record keeping, completing massive assessments on every aspect of the offenders lives and cognitive abilities, dealing with sudden changes to work and doing number of things at once

Very varied and interesting. Pressured and demanding though and it changes how you interact with people and view others. I'm a completely different person in many ways to who I was before I did this.

Oops lengthy post but not a lot of people understand what we do so it can be helpful to explain it and even my post doesnt cover much of the job, just a vague oversight

ForalltheSaints · 01/12/2018 13:18

I am not going to answer this, as if you knew, you would be asking me questions from time to time.

Violetroselily · 01/12/2018 13:25

I work for one of the big banks, setting policy on how the senior executives govern their areas of responsibility and making sure that we act within regulation. Then I monitor and report on how those policies are adhered to.

Zulor · 01/12/2018 13:27

I prepare statutory documentation for a team of surveyors for all their projects. I proactively manage two Directors' inboxes and diaries.

Zulor · 01/12/2018 13:29

LaDaronne - I love your summation Grin

I work for a local authority commissioned weight management and physical activity service. Used to be NHS but now private company.

My days are varied.
I run physical activity sessions for inactive patients that have been referred into our service - walking football, health walks, outdoor gym sessions, chair based/low intensity circuit training sessions, devise programmes and induct people in the gym. At these sessions I have to assess and measure people at the start and at the end of their 12 week intervention and keep them motivated to carry on attending for the three months. All fun stuff.

I process pensions for around 500 employers.

Basically I send submissions to the pension provider & schedule the payments to come out at the right time, deal with the pensions regulator if there's an issue (most of the employers are in receipt of direct payments from the LA so they either don't really understand the process or aren't capable of dealing with it) & yet it's the few actual companies that give me the most problems Hmm

In the new year I'll be given my own account clients to process their business accounts & hopefully start my formal training even though I've been doing it untrained in my last 2 jobs for years.

What is content marketing?

HerculesTheBercules · 01/12/2018 18:18

Unlike traditional advertising, with its blatant sales message. it delivers content people might want to read, which either overtly or subtlety delivers an advertising message.

For example, this is a school promoting their open day, but tells a story of interest to their target audience.

FishBulb · 01/12/2018 20:19

I rub oil on people to help them relax and forget their stress for 90 minutes. :)

Lollyice · 01/12/2018 20:29

I'm a postie. I spend 3 hours a day sorting letters and parcels and then go out on delivery for 4 1/2 hours.
I used to think I had the best job in the world but now I feel old and tired.

Stephisaur · 01/12/2018 20:41

We sell lift parts.

I answer technical enquiries by phone & email and I’m in charge of our product catalogue. That involves drawing the products we sell so that lift engineers can identify them more easily.

WarCat · 01/12/2018 20:44

Ive never understood what people in the armed forces do day to day. Say the navy, when they aren't on a ship then what do they do the other half of the year? And do the army just practice for war all day, doing drills and practicing shooting or whatever? Would love to watch for a week!

WarCat · 01/12/2018 20:45

Oh and I'm a vet. I think that's quite self explanatory for what I do? Mix of small animal consults and surgery, and visiting farms to treat farm animals and do health plans, and going to stables to treat horses. And then some nights on call for emergencies.

isseywithcats · 01/12/2018 20:56

i have two jobs 1st job i am a kitchen cleaner basically i pull apart a commercial kitchen clean everything behind under and at the sides of the units and put it all back together again,
then clean the canopies above the units, clean the fryers out each day, put plates away and clear up the dishwasher area,
my other job is ebay assistant for a cat charity, basically items that get more money on ebay than they would in the shops come to me in my office and i list them, pack them, send them off, return items that dont sell back to the original shop and do the admin associated with sales and returns, one job is manual one job is computer based, so a good contrast between them

SocksRock · 01/12/2018 21:14

I'm a local authority structural engineer. So I spend my days looking at cracks in schools, checking if walls are loadbearing, looking at sagging floors, reading and commenting on ground investigations for sites where we are proposing to build new school, designing and specifying remedial works to buildings, getting quotes, procuring and supervising said remedial works, and occasionally getting all dramatic and condemning buildings. I try really hard not to, but sometimes it is inevitable that a structure has reached the end of its useful life.
