Do you regularly buy new Christmas decorations?

I don't mean buying a couple of new tree decorations to add to the collection each year, I mean more like deciding on a colour theme and starting fresh most years?

I know someone who redecorates her home in the latest trends on a yearly basis and then decorates her tree to 'match' each year. I am horrified and fascinated in equal measure!

We don't do this, we have been collecting our decorations since we set up home together 18 years ago and for us a huge part of Christmas is taking them out and looking at them and remembering where and when we got them and each year we add to them. I truly LOVE a lot of our decorations and cannot imagine throwing them away.

I stick loosely to a traditional slightly nordic style, lots of red and white and wood and felt and old fashioned looking baubles and when the tree is up I love nothing more than sitting with the fire lighting, fairly lights twinkling and sipping a baileys whilst admiring it all. None of it matches but I like how it looks

I just wondered how often you replace ALL your decorations or if you do?

I am waiting patiently for the FB update including many photos of my acquaintances latest colour scheme, so far we have have had all teal, all silver, all purple, all baby blue and all white -all on a white tree - each colour was a different year!

I don't do a colour scheme and I don't buy all new stuff. We are married 25 years and bought our first few christmas tree decorations on our honeymoon (I still have them). We buy one from every place we visit and also to remember events (have a skate for the year they took skating lessons, a piano when ds started learning etc). I love putting up the tree because it is a trove of memories

Jimpix · 30/11/2018 13:47

Nope! We’re very much like you. When we had our first house, I bought everything in cream and gold. Once children came along, it started to get uncordinated so now we just embrace it! We still have some of our original decorations but our tree has evolved into an eclectic mix 😊. Definitely wouldn’t change it.

caperplips · 30/11/2018 13:47

That's like ours palliers we collect them when we travel if it's that time of year etc and I love the description that its a trove of memories!

Goodness no, who has the time and money to start fresh each year? Not to mention the environmental impact. Ours are a bit of a mish mash (though mostly mercury glass type look as that was in fashion when I bought the first lot Smile), they look nice and twinkly and colourful, what more do we need...?

Frenchfancy · 30/11/2018 13:50

Ours is like yours. We have a tradition that on the last day of school we go out and choose a new tree ornament each then go home and dress the tree. The dcs love getting the old ones out and talking about who chose what and whose turn is it to put the penguin on top of the tree.

whatswithtodaytoday · 30/11/2018 13:53

God no. I actively dislike colour coordinated trees. Where the joy? My decorations have been collected over the years, some given to me by my mum from the family decorations when I moved out. I usually buy a couple of new ones each year.

BackforGood · 30/11/2018 13:56

No
Same as everyone else on this thread - we've 'gathered' bits and bobs over the years and they are all part of the memories of our adult lives.

RomanyRoots · 30/11/2018 14:00

No, I might buy one each year but never replace unless broken. We've been together 30 years and have decs our dc made when little, they still go on the tree. They have sentimental value, even our old Angel has seen better days.

DMCWelshCakes · 30/11/2018 14:03

Coordinated trees are for hotels and shops.

My parents always got a new decoration from places they travelled to in the year. Then when DB & I came along we'd all pick a decoration each to add to the tree each year.

When DB & I moved out and got our own homes and trees we were given the decorations that we'd picked over the years. We also add to them every year with decorations from where we've travelled. And DH, DC & I all buy a new one each year.

This is why we need an 8 foot tree! Grin

BarbedBloom · 30/11/2018 14:03

We do have a colour theme but only buy one new decoration every year, that is a tradition of ours

megletthesecond · 30/11/2018 14:07

No. Just a new bauble each.

babysharkah · 30/11/2018 14:08

I used to. Now I have kids they collect and make stuff along the years, but decorations as souvenirs etc. My beautifully themed trees are a thing of the past.

Caprisunorange · 30/11/2018 14:08

I actually quite like this idea but i can’t get over how much it must cost. We invested in new tree decs a few years ago and they were hundreds of pounds.

NonaGrey · 30/11/2018 14:10

No, our tree is decorated with baubles collected over many years, made by the children and given to us as gifts. They make us smile as we decorate the tree each year.

I don’t personally like colour coordinated trees. They feel a bit soulless to me.

However my friend’s coordinates and regularly refreshes tree gives her great pleasure so as with many things - each to their own.

Dockray · 30/11/2018 14:10

Every year the children get to pick a new decoration so we have a random selection which is combined with bits that me and dh grew up with. Some of our family ones are over 40 years old. It should all clash horribly but it works.
When the children leave home they'll get to take their decorations and some of mine to form the basis of their own Christmas decoration collection.

luckylavender · 30/11/2018 14:11

I have a collection built over the years. I would be upset not to use them. Apart from that the expense & the environmental effect.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 30/11/2018 14:12

I bought all new a few years ago when we redecorated our living room and would probably doo the same again. I'm hated having a purple & black living room theme and red and gold christmas decorations.

isseywithcats · 30/11/2018 15:08

the last few years i have had a black tree with coloured tinsel a red bow and small baubles, this year i fancied a complete change so gave all that to my oldest son as he dosent have a tree, went to asda bought a pop up tree with red and gold baubles already on it, then to range and got silver glittery stars, mini trees and jingle bells to go in between the baubles, and a big silver star for the top, this will be it for a few years till i get fed up of looking at it

Do you regularly buy new Christmas decorations?
isseywithcats · 30/11/2018 15:09

thats bow at the top not star

ggirl · 30/11/2018 15:35

We have done same as you OP for last 30 years and for the first time this year I have been thinking of getting new ones and doing a theme of light blue and emerald green. My dd is horrified ..lol

Doubt I will go through with it but I am getting bored of the same stuff coming out yr on yr..bar a few new ones occasionally....yawn.

BrieAndChilli · 30/11/2018 15:45

we have a loose theme of red white and silver although there are a couple of decs that are different. i tend to buy a handful of new decs each year, this year i have bought a new set of wooden decs - the sort with little people on sledges and playing instruments etc as ours have started to fall apart a little so needed to replace them.
We have a line with pegs in the kitchen on the wall which has kids paintings etc on so for christmas all thier homemade xmas cards and decs etc from over the yeas get hung on there. doesnt spoil my colour theme in the lounge and i spend most of my time in the kitchen anyway!

spiderlight · 30/11/2018 15:46

We still have baubles from when I was a kid in the 70s/80s, mixed in with newer ones, things my DS has made st nursery/school over the years and a general mishmash of things that one or other of us has taken a fancy to. I probably buy one or two new things each year (have just bought a holographic snow projector for the front garden, after years of nagging from DS), but I certainly don't have anything you'd call a colour scheme and I'd never replace the lot in one fell swoop.

WhoisyourDaddyandwhatdoeshedo · 30/11/2018 15:46

No, I love my decs and i love seeing them every year, i add new ones but i love them...

Talkinpeece · 30/11/2018 16:04

No
One bauble each per year
Some of my decorations are older than me

ShadowWeaver · 30/11/2018 16:07

We've not really been able to afford to buy decent decorations. They are always just been the multipacks you can get in Argos. Changed about every 5 years. In fact this year was the year they were changed. Now money is slightly better I want to start buying more personal decorations, just a few a year so the tree isn't just all generic baubles.
