People driving with fog lights when not foggy

I see loads of people driving with their fog lights on , it doesn't bother me but it had made me wonder why they do it ?
Do they think it's cool , is it automatically on or do people not realise they are on ? .

Also I thought it was illegal .

And I did think why don't the fog lights blind me ( not literally ) ,I always remember my mother almost crashing her car in the 90's because fog lights were so bright .....
Is that a thing for older cars ? , If I turned mine on it would blind others unless in fog .

Does my head in 😡

megletthesecond · 29/11/2018 22:25

I'm sure it's getting worse too.
Probably too many people on their mobiles and not paying attention to their driving.

YouBoggleMyMind · 29/11/2018 22:28

I drove home yesterday in the dark and someone had their wing mirrors closed in. I literally don't get how they managed to drive anywhere with them closed. Some drivers boggle my mind!!

I think some losers see front fog lamps as a status symbol, so they keep them on. It's a bit like folk who keep the 'Cashmere' tab on the cuff of their overcoat.

It normally does my head in but I discovered driving home tonight that only one of my headlights was working and some of the street lights were out so I thought better to be seen and someone think I’m one of those idiots who drives around with their fog lights on than not. Someone coming up behind me did tailgate me and beep as they went past which I’m assuming was their subtle way of telling me I had my fog lights on but, hopefully, as he/she overtook me they realised why. They’re closer to the road and shouldn’t be angled into driver’s eyes. I have much more of a problem with people driving with full beam headlight son to be honest.
I remember once being in fog on the motorway and then it clearing up really quickly and I’d forgotten to switch them off. I’d literally only been out of the fog for a couple of minutes but someone joining at the next junction drove up fast behind me, overtook really close and then pulled in front of me tightly, deliberately cutting me up and then flashed their fog lights on and off - all at about 80 mph. It was terrifying and to be honest a hell of a lot more dangerous than me driving a mile with my fog lights on.

I used to think that, until I bought a modern car, and there are a strip of lights that automatically come on every single time I start the engine, even in bright sunshine. The headlights come on automatically when it gets dark too.

Anything that increases visibility of any vehicle is an automatic win for me, speaking as a motorcyclist. It's why my helmet is white and green, and many motorbikes are hardwired so you can't turn your headlight off even if you wanted to - you can only choose between full beam and dipped.

Obviously if you're being a prick at night and blinding someone then you need to quit that.

Childrenofthesun · 29/11/2018 22:50

Has been a thing for years where I live (Essex!). For some reason I think they think it makes them look cool, but I can't fathom why.... It is very irritating as headlights are often too bright anyway.

Celticrose · 29/11/2018 22:52

It is the people who use their rear fog lights at night when it is not foggy that grate the most. It is very difficult to drive behind someone who is doing this. I find they basically cut the eyes out of me.

KathyBates · 29/11/2018 23:59

Why would people see them as a status thing? Don't all cars have fog lights? Are some fog lights better than others?!

Fstar · 30/11/2018 00:03

Yes, annoying and people driving in poor weather on motorway with no lights at all!

meow1989 · 30/11/2018 00:16

I've rarely driven in fog that I'd say is thick enough to actually require fog lights in 11 years of driving, drives me mad (no pun intended Wink).

Also grey cars in down pours with no lights on - you blend in mate.

DishingOutDone · 30/11/2018 00:18

Aha!!

rosablue · 30/11/2018 22:42

On our old car, we discovered that the button that switched the fog lights on and off was at exactly knee pushing position and that we had inadvertently switched them on one of the first times we were driving the car - and in a new city while house hunting and got caught up in some traffic parking for a big fireworks night display that we were trying to get out of as we weren't going to the fireworks.

It was the policeman directing traffic that told us to switch them off sharpish - at which we panicked as we couldn't find the ruddy button and couldn't get to the handbook to see where it was... Found it eventually but even after having the car several years, it was still possible to knock the button without realising and turn them on, then because your knee was in front of them and there was no warning light for them on the dashboard, you didn't notice you'd done it. At lease we did know how to turn them off once we did realise they were on though!

I blame the car designers for that one - we have the newer model of the same car now and the button has moved - not much but enough that it's no longer an issue. Me thinks that we were obviously not the only ones that had those problems!

GlitterGlassEye · 30/11/2018 22:45

It’s more probably LED headlights that seem like fog lights. They should be banned imo. Far too bright.
