Taking things that have been donated for charity

I'm really interested to see other people's opinions on this.

I was at the hairdresser and someone there was telling a story that their workplace was collecting donations for the local food bank and also raffling off some other items to make money for the food bank. She said that one of the raffle organisers was seen taking one of the items that had been donated for themselves and when challenged said that they'd done a lot of the organising of the raffle and therefore it was ok - likened it to charity shop staff getting first pickings.

Just interested in whether the hive mind things this is ok? The opinion in the hairdressers was surprisingly mixed.

No its not ok, not unless she put some money in for the foodbank instead, i worked in a charity shop once, we did get first pickings, but we still paid!

SpottingTheZebras · 29/11/2018 20:38

If she paid the going charity price and gave it as a donation, then it wouldn’t bother me.

bimbobaggins · 29/11/2018 20:38

No, this is not ok in my book.

merrymalarkey · 29/11/2018 20:40

No payment offered. Just got seen taking an item and when it was mentioned said that it was fine for her to have it as she'd been involved in organising the raffle.

No, that's theft! She should have bought a raffle ticket like everyone else.

Emmalou88 · 29/11/2018 20:41

Wow! That's terrible! They may have helped out but they have chosen to do that. People have donated items to raise money.. the person taking the item is stealing. How would the person feel if they knew someone took their item.

merrymalarkey · 29/11/2018 20:44

Well I saw it as stealing too but I was surprised that a couple of people thought it was ok for her to be 'paid' in this way.

The person donating, donated to the raffle not her

PylonsPylonsPylons · 29/11/2018 20:57

It's so wrong!!! Can't beleive anyone would think that is ok.

Emmalou88 · 29/11/2018 21:04

It worrys me that some people think it's ok, they probably wouldn't think twice about doing it too! How many donated items do go to charity... 🤔

MrsTerryPratcett · 29/11/2018 21:08

I've shaken a tin for charity a few tones. What this person did is no better than if I had taken the money. I'm a volunteer after all!

woodhill · 29/11/2018 21:15

Just wrong

LEMtheoriginal · 29/11/2018 21:18

We were gifted a box of junk from theparish priest for the school fete. Mist of it really was tat so it was destined for the charity shop i spotted a small silver bowl that i liked.

I thought it was solid silver and really liked it so i took it to jewelers to value. Not silver but still nice.

I really liked it but knew it had value. So i took it to one of those valuers who visit pubs and sold it for £40. I had said if they offered £20 I'd keep it and donate to pfa myself but he offered £40 so i sold it. I still kick myself for not paying £40 myself but there was no way i couldhave just kept it even though they were effectively chucking it out.

newmumwithquestions · 29/11/2018 21:19

I think this is terrible.

merrymalarkey · 29/11/2018 21:35

I'm glad to see that it's not just me who thinks it's not ok. I actually said that I thought it was stealing and that the person should be disciplined by the employer, since it had happened at this person's workplace but I was quite strongly disagreed with.

I would be highly unimpressed if I donated something for charity and found out it never got there!

whycantyouusethephone · 29/11/2018 21:59

Thats theft. In a charity shop you get first pickings AT MARKET RATE! You can't just take the good stuff for free! I'd be appalled at the bare faced cheek
