A very dull one about bike security

After some particularly sweaty and awful commutes recently I have bought a bike and started cycling to work.

The only issue is that I don’t want to wheel it through the house every day (small Victorian semi in London that scratches the walls and wheels mud through every time we go through), our front ‘driveway’ is pebble so I can’t get a bike store installed outside, and my house is too small to store it inside.

Has anyone found a solution? Is there a lock that is strong enough that I could lock it up at the front of my house without worrying too much? The bike cost £100 on eBay (from a genuine seller, not stolen!) so not a disaster if it is stolen. But I love it (and love cycling to work) so would rather it wasn’t stolen.

Use more than one lock and don’t use a cable lock, too easily cut through. Both my mum and neighbour have lost bikes through using these.

Chains and D-locks take longer to get through. If you used several of these types it may put a thief off.

I have a very expensive bike £2.5K+ so my bike security might be a lot more than your budget.

I have a lot of locks, I live in a high bike theft area.

I have a Kryptonite New York chain lock. It's big and heavy
A Sherlock GPS in the handlebars
A Nulock, really loud
and I've just got a Linka Leo

None are cheap, except maybe the Nulock, but my bike is not getting nicked!

Some links in case it's of use to anyone.

Oh also go to some bike rental places, the generally have good quality locks and might sell you one of theirs. I got my Kryptonite from the shop I got my bike from. The owner sold me one of his own and gave me a massive discount on what it would have been if I'd got it elsewhere.

@GatherYourPearls thank you so much

The Nulock might work for you. It's not big bucks and is crazy loud so you'd hear it from inside your house. I needed an extra long one for my bike so got it on amazon.com www.amazon.com/Keyless-Bluetooth-Motorcycle-Splash-Proof-Diameter/dp/B06XCZCRCM/?tag=mumsnetforum-21

If you can easily take off the saddle or front wheel, that will deter the average thief.

Aftershock15 · 29/11/2018 19:07

What are you planning to lock it to? All those locks will not stop someone just carrying it away if not firmly attached to something. I have a couple metal bike stands installed in concrete in my gravel drive to lock bikes to. You can get them in interesting shapes or just simple n shape.

KnobOfStork · 29/11/2018 19:19

What bike do you have? The sort of components will affect overall desirability so e.g. I have roller brakes and hub gears which makes getting the wheels off a nightmare. If you've got a quick release wheel etc that would be more at risk. And I've seen people who've locked their bike through the wheel left only with their wheel Sad
I have this bike lock outside my house but don't really feel confident to use it. Have you considered getting a folder? A second hand Brompton if you can afford it? I'm currently saving slowly for a Brompton, they fold into a bag so can be carried onto transport, into shops etc.

KnobOfStork for quick release parts you don't want stolen but don't want to take with you then the hexloxs are really good hexlox.com/

KnobOfStork · 29/11/2018 19:40

GatherYourPearls ooh might get one for my saddle, thanks. I'm after a new one but bike theft is like a hobby round here. Bike has already cost me a fortune this month thanks to buckling the back wheel on a pothole Angry

GatherYourPearls · 29/11/2018 23:35

If you email the hex people they are really helpful and will tell you what ones you need. I got so confused I ended up sending them pictures and they worked it straight out.

I love bike security... Can you tell Grin
