Toddler choked on her sick 😩

Dd (2.6) was fast asleep in bed, I was just about to go sleep when I heard her moan mummy. She’s been doing it most nights but she is asleep
So I normally ignore her. Tonight I went in straight away and her mouth was wet but no sick. She turned around and started gagging/freaking out. I sat her up and she projectile vomited everywhere, and again as I rushed her to the toilet.

Iv cleaned her up and her bed/floor. She seems completely fine in herself but a little warm. She’s gone back bed fine.

Thing is she’s been absolutely fine all day. She’s had a cold but nothing major.

What shall i do? Just keep checking on her? 😩😩

I was thinking of putting her in our room but I thought if she was sick in our bed then neither of us would have anywhere to sleep. 😩

It doesn’t sound to me like she choked on her sick, just that she vomited. It’s quite normal to gag/retch before vomiting.

I’m sorry she’s I’ll but I do think she sounds aware enough to wake to vomit if it happens again. Choking on sick tends to only happen when people are unconscious.

I agree that it sounds like normal pre-vomit signs. Is this the first time she's had a sickness bug? They are horrid! Huge sympathies!

If her bed is okay to sleep in I would put her back there with an old towel or two underneath her, plus a big bowl nearby, and a drink of water.

If she is going to be sick again she will wake up and call or make a noise again and you will wake up too.

Make sure everyone washes hands thoroughly.

I'm a pretty solid sleeper and I haven't missed a child being sick in the night yet.

Hope the night goes okay for you.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 28/11/2018 22:49

I tend to sleep in the same room as my kids when ill (when they're little). I put sofa cushions on the floor (away from any sick) so I'm relatively comfortable. I do worry about not hearing them, but I haven't yet.

Definitely get a load of towels ready to catch sick with. Definitely don't catch it in your hands, making a bowl shape, as it means you can't pick up a towel or turn on a tap without dropping sick!!

Also sounds like she did a pre-vomit retch. I tend do have a few dry heaves myself before finally being sick.

Try a waterproof sheet / bed sheet sandwich. So put on a waterproof sheet, then a regular sheet, then another waterproof sheet, then a regular sheet. At least that way you get one easy change in the night as you just whip off the top two layers.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 28/11/2018 22:53

Thanks all! More worried she’s coming down with something 😩 she’s only just got over a bad cold.

She keeps crying out for daddy (you know the one who comforted her while I scrubbed sick 🙄) but I go in and she falls back asleep. She has no temp at all.

I have a serious phobia of choking so your thread title really panicked me, BUT even I agree that it doesn't actually sound like she choked.
It must have been very scary for you. I'd keep her close tonight, but try not to worry too much. Hope she's feeling better soon.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 28/11/2018 23:09

She’s been sick again 😩😩 I can hear phlegm on her chest so I don’t know if it’s that?

She also ate 2 mince pies earlier (🙈🙈🙈) and that’s all she seems to be throwing up, the giant raisins.

We are sleeping on the sofa 😥

My 3 yr old had his first sickness bug recently and he totally freaked out before being sick just like you described. Then the baby got it too. I put double sheets on my bed and then towels all over the top of them and we all slept on there (DH on sofa). I kept loads of muslins to hand and just peeled off the layers as the night went on.

If things are smelly tomorrow can recommend cleaning with clothes powder/liquid diluted and then sprinkling bicarb of soda on top for a bit.

Hope she feels better soon. Encourage her to keep sipping water.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 28/11/2018 23:28

Oh bless then & you!!

She’s been sick 3 times now but seemed to have nothing left. She keeps standing up and screaming when it’s coming on. I don’t know how to comfort her or what to do when she’s going to be sick? Iv put loads of towels down on the floor and sofa. She’s so tired bless her 😩

My immune system is so low I hope I don’t get it 😩😷

I would put her back in her own bed... It's going to be much more comfortable and normal for her. In fairness, all children get freaked out by puking. I'd lie with her for a few minutes and hopefully she'll sleep after that. She's not going to choke! And you'll wake if she starts again. Try to relax, it's all quite natural, she's obviously got a tummy bug.

Makido · 28/11/2018 23:46

It could be worth having a bowl to hand. My son did that, standing and crying first which gave me time to get the bowl in front of him and he did really well getting it all in there. Obviously the baby not so much ha! I think you can just try and reassure in a calm and soothing way that she'll feel better in a minute when it comes. It's difficult.

Also he coughed while being sick and literally sprayed my face so I resigned myself to also getting it, but I never did. You might get lucky! Hope you get some sleep

Brexshit · 28/11/2018 23:47

I would ring 111 for advice. I would be worried that she may have aspirated some vomit, especially if she sounds phlegmy.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 29/11/2018 00:40

She’s only sleeping for 10 mins then waking up being sick.

I can hear the husband snoring up stairs and I want to murder him.

Little ones with chesty coughs swallow their phlegm and our stomachs are not good at digesting phlegm so, with little ones, they often end up vomiting to clear it out. Hopefully she’ll feel better soon x

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 29/11/2018 08:28

She’s so much better this morning, she’s been asking for food 😂

It all sounds awful for those of you with poorly little ones. I raised a large family and often sick bugs would go through several of them.
All the advice about towels and double sheeting is great but why aren't any of you using a bowl or bucket, even a two year old can learn how to throw up in a bucket, it will save you so much mess and laundry and cut down the risk of cross contamination too.

WhirlwindHugs · 29/11/2018 19:58

Er... Lots of people mentioned bowls?

Anyway - I'm glad she's feeling better OP!

5SleepingLions · 29/11/2018 20:34

Op please keep a close watch on your Dd my son developed aspirated pneumonia a year ago this month and he ended up in the hdu in hospital very poorly.
He chocked on vomit and inhaled some it was a very scary time.

5SleepingLions · 29/11/2018 20:36

Oops I mean choked
