In A&E with suspected quinsy

DH had to go home to DD, have had IV steroids, two types of antibiotics and on IV fluids now. Can't swallow, in a pretty dark place right now. Is anyone up?

SleepWarrior · 28/11/2018 01:30

I'm up.

You poor thing, quinsy is horrible.

But it WILL pass. Do you think you can sleep for now?

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 28/11/2018 01:34

Sorry to hear it. Are you in a bed on a ward? Could you sweet talk a nurse for some good painkillers and perhaps a sleeping pill?
It will pass, you are in the best place. I've also been alone in hospital a few times when DH had to go back to the kids, it's not fun at all. Last time was in fact Christmas Day, so good for you for getting this sorted before then! Flowers

DramaAlpaca · 28/11/2018 01:39

I'm just on my way to bed. Hope you're OK. My DS, who's 24, has has a few nasty bouts of tonsillitis in the last couple of years & I'd always be on the alert in case it turned into quinsy so I'm aware how nasty it is. Hope you can get some sleep. You're in the best place Flowers

nocoolnamesleft · 28/11/2018 01:44

You're in the right place, and you already have treatment on board. Hang on in there.

gluteustothemaximus · 28/11/2018 01:48

I had this. Was in hospital for a week. It’s truly awful. You are in the very best place and you will be fine Flowers

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 28/11/2018 02:27

Flowers it will pass. I know it doesn't feel that way now. But you'll soon feel a little better. Just get through the next minute, and then the next.

GobbyMcGobshite · 28/11/2018 02:35

You'll recover far quicker in the hospital and you don't have to worry about the cooking, cleaning or childcare. Take the time to rest and take all the painkillers you can get! I hope it passes quickly and you can be back home soon Thanks

I was laid in bed for the best part of 2 weeks last month because I couldn't talk or walk so there was no chance of calling 111 and going to A&E. Plus trying to entertain, feed, bathe and change a toddler when you can barely move is no fun at all.

Vebrithien · 28/11/2018 03:42

Thank you everyone. Am still on a bed in A&E, no beds available on the wards. Had no painkillers since 7pm yesterday (reached the maximum dose) and have now been waiting almost 2 hours for some IV paracetamol. Just managing half dozes. How much better did it feel once the abcess was drained?

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 28/11/2018 03:51

Apparently it's instant relief when it's been drained. Unfortunately most of our patients with it won't have it done as they are children. But I did have an 8 year old who sat still for it!

KonaMum · 28/11/2018 03:55

Oh OP that sounds absolutely vile. I really hope they drain it soon for you and that you get your painkillers! It seems completely unfair that they’ve left you without drugs for this long. Surely you couldv’ve had some oramorph?!

RedWineIsFabulous · 28/11/2018 03:57

You poor thing. It sounds horrendous.

You are absolutely going to feel better soon and they will make sure of that.

Unmumsnetty hugs.

Vebrithien · 28/11/2018 04:19

Finally got painkillers! Just knowing that they are dripping in is making me feel better, less anxious. Thanks for talking to me.

OP posts:
VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 28/11/2018 04:23

Hang in there OP. This time tomorrow you'll be sleeping like a log, pain free and totally on the mend.

INeedNewShoes · 28/11/2018 04:27

You poor thing OP. To have quinsy is bloody miserable and to be stuck in A&E is horrid too. I hope they find somewhere more civilised to put you soon!

Everything always feels worse at night but just a couple of hours and daytime will be here. Can anyone come and sit with you today?

For now, best possible plan is to sleep if you possibly can once those painkillers kick in.

DramaAlpaca · 28/11/2018 09:14

How are you feeling this morning, OP? Hope you managed to get some sleep.

Vebrithien · 28/11/2018 09:32

Thanks for asking. Been drained, not much but feeling loooooads better. More antibiotics (but got upset tummy now) still in A&E though!

OP posts:
VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 28/11/2018 09:35

Glad to hear it OP. Upset tummy is no fun but great sign the antibiotics are kicking in. Onwards and upwards!

OutPinked · 28/11/2018 09:37

Oh I really do sympathise, it’s so wretched. I had it when I was 16. The hospital really is the best place. I was in for about a week but felt much better once I left. Hope you’re feeling better soon Flowers.

gluteustothemaximus · 28/11/2018 12:29

I lost a tonne of weight in hospital when I had it. Just think, you'll be out in time for Christmas, with some weight lost, and able to pile it all back on with Christmas treats Grin

Positive thinking.

(Plus, when I had it years ago, I had no phone and no internet. Just laid staring up at the ceiling all day long feeling shite)

Vebrithien · 28/11/2018 15:38

I like the preparation for Christmas idea! Have had my first cuppa since Sunday, and they gave me ice cream for lunch. Talking of discharging me tomorrow, as all obs are looking much better. Have two different types of super powered antibiotics. Can't quite believe the difference in how I feel now. Mind you, the after-lunch nap helped Grin

Home safely now, with a fortnight of antibiotics and three weeks of steroids. Can't quite believe just how much better I feel now, just got mild cold symptoms. Such a good job I phoned 111, who made me an urgent care GP appointment within 45 mins. By the time they saw me, the GP transferred me straight to A&E (same building). If I hadn't made that call, apparently I'd have most likely been blue lighted from home, or (dramatically) even worse, as I was in the early stages of sepsis Shock Thanks for all your comments and well wishes, they were a massive help. Appetite slowly recovering, and actually had a slice of toast this morning!

barnacharmer · 30/11/2018 08:34

Ugh, Vebrithien. I feel for you, I've had 2 quinsies. One at 15 which was terrible, they put me in the kids ward on an antibiotic drip and it made no difference until they drained it 3 days later- agony until then. The 2nd I was around 23 and asked for it to be drained as soon as I went in. The relief is amazing isn't it?
I used to get tonsillitis regularly and was terrified of getting another quinsy but I discovered bee propolis spray in a pharmacy in Europe when I had the beginnings of an infection. I think i have only had tonsillitis once in the 8 years since I found it. I also take propolis supplements now to boost my immune system so I don't tend to get colds either. I'd highly recommend it to anyone prone to throat infections
