Toddler and Cows Milk

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else has a fussy toddler that won't drink cows milk? And if you did, and they do now, how did you get them to drink it?
As soon as my DS turned 1 I tried him on cows milk and he point blank refused it. He is now 18 months old. He will have cows milk in cereal, just not as a drink. He has a bottle of follow on milk in the mornings which he asks for as soon as he wakes.
Friends have suggested putting honey in the cows milk, chocolate powder, half and half with the follow on, but it's like his spidey sense goes off and he knows it's not the norm, he won't even entertain the idea of trying it!
I Don't want to take away his follow on milk in the morning if he won't drink an alternative, I wouldn't like it if someone took away my cup of tea in the morning and insisted I drink coffee, iyswim?
Does He need cows milk? Will he eventually just give up the follow on milk?
Would love some advise please
Xx

Why are you so keen for him to drink cows milk?

My 2yr old will occasionally have a cup of cows milk but he normally prefers water. He was bf and still does a couple of times a day. He was definitely not keen on cows milk when first offered.

There are plenty of other things you can give him to drink.

Please don't try adding sugar/honey/chocolate to it as encouragement; you'll just create another "problem"

Oh and he doesn't need cows milk

I never drank cow's milk, just don't like it. Provided he gets other sources of calcium etc I wouldn't worry about it.

Dd is dairy intolerant so does not have cows milk. A toddler needs 350mg of calcium a day and multivitamins. This is for all toddlers.

Dd used to hate milk and got all her calcium from yoghurts. She now drinks soya milk. If you want to try non diary milk then alpro growing up milk or oatly barista are only ones equivalent to ‘full fat’ dairy milk.

He doesn’t need cows milk or follow on milk. If he has milk in cereal plus yoghurt, cheese etc then he’ll be getting enough. Make sure he’s having vitamin D to help absorb calcium.

Thanks for your replies.
It's not that I desperately want him to drink cows milk, I just thought it would be a better alternative to the follow on milk for his morning "brew" in effect.
I read on the nhs website about giving toddlers vitamin drops in milk, but it says they don't need them if on follow on, so this is another reason why I carry on with it.
He loves cheese and yoghurts, so I'm not worried about his calcium intake.

If he is having less than 17oz of formula day then he needs additional vitamins.

Lolololololol · 27/11/2018 15:35

17oz? Really???
He just has one of those pre made cartons that is 7oz!
What vitamins do you suggest? Oh I feel like I need to go research this better 🙁

It is definitely not something which is well advertised. You just need to a multivitamin with a, c and in. There are loads on the market. You can buy the nhs ones from Superdrug but I think you can get them free on low incomes.

I give the wellkid ones but I think I’m just been suckered into giving one that covers the most vitamins and minerals.

Is it because it's not sweet like formula?

My son had goat milk formula and then goat milk whole now that he is 2 and has done since about a year old.
I know my friends son won't drink milk unless it's formula

Lolololololol · 27/11/2018 15:50

Thank you all. I'll give some of these other milks a try, and get some multivitamins. I have seen them in Morrison's, but didn't want to overdose him, not realising that he wasn't having enough formula to make a difference anyway! x

All kids should have a daily multivitamin once on less than 17oz formula a day. We use boots ones but lots available. Ditch the follow on milk. It’s really sweet and totally unnecessary. Offer cows milk or water throughout the day. Feed him plenty of calcium containing food.
