Folding scooter for commuting

Bestseller · 27/11/2018 08:31

DH has a short drive/long walk to the station. Two days a week he has a volunteering commitment after work, which means be needs to take the car or he will be late. "His" parking spot has just become permit only, which was always coming but is a blow to him.

If he were to consider a folding scooter what does he need? It would need to be strong enough for 13st and small and light enough not to be a nuisance on the crowded train. Any recommendations?

I have an adult Micro Scooter. Love it! Sturdy and foldable. Not too heavy to carry, but quite awkward to carry far.

will he use the scooter on the road, or the pavement? If the latter, will he be stopping and giving way to pedestrians?

Some of the Decathlon ones are suitable for adults and support that weight.

No ifailed, I think it's a fairly safe assumption that DH is an arse who will be knocking over little old ladies on his way to his regular volunteering

In which case, he needs to get the one with the blades on the wheels for slicing into non compliant pedestrians.

I would only recommend a micro scooter if he's going to be using smooth pavements - if he's going over rough road surfaces he will need one with pneumatic tyres instead of hard wheels.

Unless he is doing the school run with a child and both using scooters. Seriously what grown man uses a scooter?

He should learn to skateboard or use a folding electric bike

Isn't the great thing about being a grown job that you stop caring how you look/what people think and if a scooter (or anything else) make your life better you can just go for it

Besides which in London lots of grown men use scooters

I use a scooter!! Ignore the idiots. I don’t know why, conceptually, it is seen any differently from a bicycle. It’s the perfect compromise for some commutes and far better for the environment and people’s lungs than driving.

I had a maxi micro and it was v good. But broke after a couple of years. I now have a much cheaper one that I bought on amazon and it is just as good, so you don’t need to spend a fortune.

Loads of adults use scooters here (coastal city)

I have a fold up adult micro scooter and it’s great. Works really well on smooth surfaces (not much experience of anything else). My scooter folds away so takes up nobody’s space on the train and saves me about 25 minutes a day, which I can spend with DS. I absolutely couldn’t care less what people think of me!

Wouldn't a bike be better? Faster, more comfortable, easier to use on the roads, easier to do longer distances etc.

There is normally bike parking at the station, or there are really good folding bikes that he could take on the train to use at both ends.

Make sure he gets decent lights and reflectives for safety.
