Oral Head lice treatment??? And other ideas for willful 3½yr old....

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 27/11/2018 07:58

Has anyone used an oral headlice treatment successfully?? Or have any suggestions for a Very willful nearly 4 year old?! My DC Will Not tolerate hair brushing - once a week with lots of fuss (not a massive problem he had sorry hate and doesn't get tangled), or washing - bathes several times a week but we just wet his hair not shampoo it and he still screams (again not a problem in itself he's not a sweaty child and water suffices)... On Sunday DH and I nit combed him for a couple of minutes, more to establish properly that he Had nits more than anything else, and he screamed and writhed so badly all the way through (and for 20 minutes+ after), pulling at his hair and thrashing on the floor that I can't imagine how we could treatment in??? Since then - IE Sunday night and last night - I have created into his room with a head torch and Comb and established he Has got nits - so far killed 6!! Can't find any eggs tho? And his hair is very fine.... 🤔 Can I just carry on with this and hope to eliminate this way over time or does anyone have any suggestions???!

Please help!!

No idea re oral treatment but my youngest is a lice magnet. I am very close to just shaving his head

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 27/11/2018 08:01

And THAT'S why we have the 'preview' function.... 🙄😂

Sorry hate = short hair
Created = crept
Etc!

Do you even get oral treatments? Can you not just slather on Hedrin to kill them and then repeat weekly for a couple of weeks to get rid of hatchlings

HotInWinter · 27/11/2018 08:16

Bribery!
AFAIK, the 2 methods are either to slather on chemicals, then wash them all out, or pile on conditioner and comb, comb, comb. Both should be repeated.
So, treat bag of chocolate buttons, and favourite programme on tv and conditioner and combing would be my choice.
Good Luck!

Temporaryanonymity · 27/11/2018 08:17

Use conditioner and then comb. It really doesn't hurt so much.

I used to sit mine in front of the TV. Have you checked yourself yet?

ivykaty44 · 27/11/2018 08:20

Pop some olive oil on his hair, the olive oil puts the nits into a sleeping state. Tell him it’s s gel to make his hair look good?

Leave on his hair for 8 hours

But how you wash it out without shampoo I don’t know

Temporaryanonymity · 27/11/2018 08:21

My (autistic and waterphobia) so soon came around when he realised what was crawling around in his hair.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/11/2018 08:22

I've used oral ivermectin tablets on dd which worked well. It's just getting hold of them which is the issue as they're not licensed here, though I believe it's common in America?

BertrandRussell · 27/11/2018 08:23

Hedrin is the best treatment- no pesticides and very effective- you can get away without bit combing if you're in a position to shell out loads of cash and do it often. But you do have to wash it out-which is not easy, and may be a problem for you. Bribery?

Lwmommy · 27/11/2018 08:24

Seconding bribey!

Chocolate and phone/tablet with favourite crap show/YouTube channel.

Get vamoose or Hedrin as they don't need to stay on hair for ages before being washed off.

Expect and be willing to deal with the screaming, it's a necessary evil.

If you're feeling generous offer some kind of blind bag toy as a reward for getting through it (and have some wine in the fridge for you when you're done)

Henceforth and forever more you need a good nit deterrent spray, you can find them in boots near the nit killing potions. This will need to be sprayed regularly till your child grows out of the hugging, touching, heads bent together playing stage.

BertrandRussell · 27/11/2018 08:24

The idea of an oral treatment horrifies me- that can't be sensible, surely?

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/11/2018 08:44

It's been used for decades in America and is considered safe and more effective. I guess it must be licensed by their FDA or whatever it's called?

gamerchick · 27/11/2018 08:48

Just shave the head. It's not worth the aggro.

Even if you hedrin overnight, you still have to wash the stuff out.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 27/11/2018 08:56

I would offer him the choice between letting you comb through his hair as often as needed, without making it a PITA, or getting his head shaved. If my DS gets nits, It's probably going to be clipper time.

DoryNow · 27/11/2018 09:04

Treatments only kill the crawlers not the eggs the little deckers are impervious.

Combing is the only way & as PP have said start with bribery - fav programme, bowl of fav sweets, sit him down every night even if just for a few minutes & use a nitcomb. He’ll get used to it then you can start slowly substituting just a few chocs for Apple or other fruit - they get to like it once they realise it’s quite soothing, one of mine used to nod off at times!!

Lice have a 21 day life cycle so I’d say do every day for a week, & when you get less crawlers you are winning but there will still be hatchlings- once you are in a routine do it every 3 days.

It’s a complete PITA but persevere it will get easier, then you can have a preventive comb through maybe once a week just to check as they will come back :(

lifetothefull · 27/11/2018 09:41

haircut.

Johnnycomelately1 · 27/11/2018 09:56

Hearing once kills the eggs so don’t need to comb.

Johnnycomelately1 · 27/11/2018 09:56

Hedrin

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 27/11/2018 18:35

Thanks all for replies! I think I will keep doing what I'm doing for a bit longer then try with the bribery.... Fingers crossed!

Killing a few lice at a time Won t work. Just hold him still, both of you if need be,and apply hedrin once. Apparently doesn't need combing, and do it again one week later. Maybe you could put a towel on his pillow and apply while he's asleep? It's difficult, 5 year old has had them this week too I pitbull marks on before bed.

Chipsahoy · 27/11/2018 21:06

Yup hedrin once. My ds had it last Tuesday. Used that stuff and although I've combed every night since, not found even an egg. Just repeated the treatment at day seven and combed, no lice or eggs.

Oh and I keep my ds hair short so easy to comb
