I've had better starts to the day Hmm.

Kitchen / diner bulb exploded when I turned it on and upstairs landing bulb has just done the same. Metal ring is still stuck in the light, the glass kind of popped out. Fuse board tripped as it should.

I'm going to call the electricians shortly. But does anyone have any ideas what's just gone so wrong? House was re-wired two years ago, appears to be dry and safe. No other weird problems are happening.

old style bulbs?
they get very hot and are sensitive to changing temperatures and current.

Have you just changed the bulb? I'm not sure you need an electrician.
My kitchen one did that 2 days ago (also tripped the fuse box as it should. After removing the old bulb (pretty sure you will still be able to remove it even if there's only the base remaining) and changing it, flick the fuse box switch back on and see if it's OK.

I'd only call an electrician if the next bulb blows too.

Not wanting to frighten you but...
When this happened to us, it turned out there was a fault in the mains under the street and the neutral wire had become live.
Light bulbs popped, various electricals made odd noises and we had to turn off the power.
We were lucky, our neighbors nearest the fault had things explode and burn.

That's a worst case scenario and due to it being a mains fault the power company had to pay for everything to be repaired! Or replaced. Was a great way to get to know our neighbors as we huddled outside in the early hours wondering what was happening!

cigars that's what I'm wondering. It might be something in the street that caused it to surge.
